Taking a biology class and "survival of the fittest" sounds very eugenics like and I'm Uncomfortable. 😬 Is it?

survival of the fittest was a concept and term coined by Charles Darwin, who was actually quite progressive for his time. Eugenics developed after his death using the principle to apply to humans, which it was never intended to be used for. The term Social Darwinism was coined and I don’t think Charles would have liked to be considered associated. That is why it sounds similar though. Eugenicists appropriated the theory of natural selection to justify being racist and ableist.

I'd also like to say as a lot of PBS content on YouTube likes to point out, "survival of the fittest" doesn't mean "fit" as in "physically strong" the way people usually use that term,

it's more like "survival of the fittest" where "fit" means "fitting together like a puzzle piece", and the rest of the puzzle is the local ecosystem.

Survival of the fittest = this organism evolved to succeed in a specific ecological niche in this particular ecosystem

That's why the plants and animals on the Galapagos islands are so unique, they all evolved specifically to fill ecological niches unique to the islands, some of which are vastly different to their original mainland ancestors roles.

If you would like a free documentary to watch about the Galapagos and the animals that live there, I cannot recommend this channel enough to anyone with a passion for nature and learning :)

This is an important note as well. I forget that some people do just genuinely hear that phrase and assume there is an “ideal” or “peak” form for a species. There isn’t, only an ideal form in context of its environment. The most fit species at the bottom of the ocean won’t do well on a mountain peak after all.
