User Experience Study | Parking Portal
This transect model explores human interaction potentials for a technology campus. Everyday workers, VIP guests, and the general public mix in public common spaces. Yet, the integration of security is essential for this innovation hub consisting of multiple tech tenants. The model serves as a conversation tool to visualize real estate opportunities in time and space for the product development team. The outcome of the dialogue informs the building and landscape programs for design resolution.
Mixed-use Development Vision Sketches
Working in conjunction with architects, these illustrations compliment digital models by animating the public life into otherwise bare 3d models. The result is a effective way to assert an exuberant touch of experiential dimensions mindful of an efficient work flow. This intuitive mode of hand sketch activates spatial research derived from memory and deploys it with story telling qualities; a valuable resource unlocking value by a design team under limited time and staffing resources.
Value Creator Tool to Urban Design Guidelines
How does design-thinking enable value creation? Can the front and back of a property assume dual frontage? Who needs to be a the table early on? A transect model reveals ways to “blur” the integration of security and privacy measures for an office building along a high-volume thoroughfare. Vehicular and pedestrian experience is presented to the client team through the visualization of spatial relationships. Multidisciplinary topics include: storm water drainage, parking substructure and ventilation, civil engineering strategies, walkability and storefront opportunities, and human comfort and passive climatic design. Early collaboration is centered around this engagement tool inviting specialists in sustainability, engineering, real estate marketing, regulatory frameworks, and facilities management to provide feedback present with the principal client team. The identification of technical areas works in concert with the value proposition of the conceptual vision for the project. These project values transform into urban design guidelines for the final deliverables of the master planning scope.
Zoning and Design Visualization By Phu Duong
Beyond Charcoal Analysis
As a practicing professor invested in developing urban design curricula, I’d like to remark on 100 years of New York City zoning history as an opportunity to contemplate the role of visualization in the advancement of human progress in cities. Let’s think about the future of zoning by looking at what our young professionals are thinking about in cities and how they are thinking it.

Urban design means new spaces and places for next generation economies
As cities lift themselves out of the Great Recession more and more articles touch on the phenomenon of gentrification, it bewilders me that everyone speaks as though it is understood widely. But I don’t think it is. When urban change is talked about, the word “gentrification” drops in like an unwelcomed neighbor. It bulldozes over […]
If you’ve walked around New York City in the past few years you may have noticed a change in the urban street experience. It doesn’t feel any less crowded and perhaps not much cleaner either. But there is something more hospitable about it. More space. More places where people are welcome to sit and stay […]
Invisible Elements of Staten Island Ferry Road
The Ferry Road itself dosen’t present a lot of infornations. However, this becomes a good opportunity to explore the invisible data of this hustle and bustle body of water. The selected data include the time table of the ferry, other moving vehicles and their own route, New Jersey’s territory which has been crossed everyday, tags for introducing different places, Hurricane Sandy’s flood area, the depth of water and the last and also the most important one, is the movement.
I use all different kinds of angle and perspective of views to describe the movement, which include the view from ferry itself, the view from helicopter, the view from top and side and view from Statue of Liberty.
The overall concept of this model is tryig to elaborate all different kinds of information from this body of water as much as I can. After this, demenstrate this data-annotated urban fragment from all different kinds of angle.

The Circulation of Knowledge
The American Museum of Natural History, Manhattan
Located in the core of Manhattan, The American Museum of Natural History is way more than just a piece of building. The Museum is a knowledge palimpsest, which draws its visitors to reveal each layers of new learning experiences. There are knowledge transfers that happen everyday here. The system is enforced by the structure of subway lines that bring the visitor to elsewhere and the structure of recreation in Central Park, where the still dioramas of The Natural Museum were brought alive.

COMMON SPACE - ANNUAL NYC PRIDE

I measured FAR on potential building designs. It’s an important factor on the lower east river because if the buildings are designed within the appropriate limit of the FAR, it can reduce flood affected areas.

DMUD + RNYU 2014 Reel
This video exhibits student course work from the Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design degree program at Columbia University GSAPP. The archive reel shares examples of multimedia works about New York City urbanism made by urban designers. Excerpted clips comprise of lessons from the two courses: Digital Modeling for Urban Design (DMUD) and Reading New York Urbanism (RNYU).
