The 3rd Cities of Light symposium Beyond The Enlightenment: Seismic Shifts, Urban Imagery examines the active relationship between photographic practice and the way in which the history of cities is expressed in their urbanism. Gathering the work of 25 photographers, the exhibition offers a dialogue between portuguese artists and international members of the Urban Photographers’ Association (UPA). This is the second chapter, written from Lisbon, of an exhibition originally conceived and presented in London, in 2017.

Cities of Light - Paris is the 1st in a series of UPA symposia focusing on photography, urban life and ‘light’ in European cities. The one-day symposium takes place in May 2018 at the University of Paris V (Sorbonne), followed by two days of workshops in Paris. iUPSS - International Photography Summer School
The iUPSS - International Photography Summer School returns in August 2018. Designed for photographers, artists and researchers whose work address notions of urban space and culture, the Summer School provides a highly intensive two-week practical and theoretical training in key aspects of urban visual practice and research. The course aims to offer participants a wide range of relevant skills resulting in the production of a photography portfolio drawn from London’s urban environments along with a collective final exhibition.

Celebrate 10 years of Urban Encounters at the Urban Photographers Association (UPA) annual artist’s keynote lecture from the internationally acclaimed photographic artist Roger Ballen at Tate Britain on Friday 10 November 2017, followed by a wine reception and #UPF17 festival launch event. The following day (Saturday 11 November 2017) sees the annual Urban Encounters conference also at Tate Britain. In addition, a symposium, Urban Photography: Making, Researching, Teaching takes place at The Photographers’ Gallery, London, UK on Monday 13 November 2017. This winter Camilo José Vergara's 'Detroit is No Dry Bones' presents a comprehensive photographic record of almost three decades of Detroit’s changing built environment. The book is launched in the USA at New York University and MIT (published at University of Michigan Press).
In addition, Stefano Carnelli's project, Transumanza is published with an essay by Monica Sassatelli (Goldsmiths, University of London) in Berlin by Peperoni Books, the book is launched and exhibited at Micamera, Milan, Italy. Furthermore, Isidro Ramirez’s Jakarta - Modest Interventions and Minor Improvisations is reviewed in Source 88: The Photobook Issue and a photo essay published by Guardian Cities. Also, Ramirez exhibits 'Uncertain Topographies' at Francesca Maffeo Gallery, UK, June-July 2017. A Migrant's Tale by Tanya Houghton features in the 2016 ‘Food’ edition of the British Journal of Photography and is shown at SHED London in June 2017. Paul Halliday speaks at ‘Art on the Streets,’ Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, UK.
In the summer of 2016, Diego Ferrari was in charge of the creative workshop entitled Photography Art and Performativity for Northeastern University’s architecture programme during their semester in Barcelona. Following the programme he was invited to publish the methodology and concept that he put into practice during the fieldwork. This is published in Common Ground, Volume 1: Discourses – by the School of Architecture, Northeastern University College of Art, Media and Design, Boston, USA, in collaboration with Enric Miralles Foundation and Mies van der Rohe Foundation Barcelona.
In the United States of America Gesche Würfel exhibits her project, Oppressive Architecture at CAM Raleigh, North Carolina, USA and Basement Sanctuaries in Living in the Shadows: Underground Immigrant Communities, Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA. Also, she was selected as a Jurors’ Pick in the Lens Culture Emerging Talent Awards. Sayed Hasan exhibits 'My Granddad's Car' (his collaboration with Karl Ohiri) at the New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK, November-December 2016, the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London in January 2017 and at #AlchemySC SouthBank Centre, London, May 2017. Bas Losekoot exhibits his work 'In Company of Strangers' Kaunas Gallery, Lithuania and in an outdoor exhibition, as part of the "Encounters of Young International Photography 2017" initiated by CACP-Villa Pérochon, Niort, France. Finally, Laura Cuch’s project ‘Spiritual Flavours’ features in Poliittisen valokuvan festival, Helsinki, Finland. Simon Rowe presents work at ‘Ethnographic Encounters,’ Birkbeck, University of London.
David Kendall’s project, ‘Disappearing into Night’ will be shown at ‘Circuits of Labour, Obligation and Debt,’ Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford, UK. His photographs of the Alton West Estate in Roehampton, London commissioned by Professor Jane Rendell and The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, feature in Professor Rendell’s publication, The Architecture of Psychoanalysis: Spaces of Transition, published with IB Tauris. The book is launched at University College London in May 2017.

Peter Coles is continuing his work on the Urban Forest. As co-initiator with the Conservation Foundation of the Morus Londinium project to research and document London’s heritage of old mulberry trees Peter uses contemporary photography and archive material to map urban change over the past centuries. From 5-7 May 2017 Peter will be leading a UPA/Goldsmiths’ workshop with Anne Zeitz on “Cartographies” in collaboration with the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP).
In collaboration with the Museum of Walking, Peter is leading several urban walks, using significant trees as waypoints. Most of these walks are in London Tree Week at the end of May, with funding from the Greater London Authority, London Metropolitan Archive and Conservation Foundation.
Andy Day and Diego Ferrari launch Parkour photography workshops in London and Copenhagen, check out the courses at Landmann Studios. Andy Day publishes 'Buildering: barely even a thing,' in the Journal of Public Space.
Finally, Stefano Carnelli and Urbiquity are organising a 1-week visual urbanism residency in Madrid, Spain in June 2017. A programme of walks and talks, practice and theory will be carried out over seven days. As a result a selection of the projects will be shown in London as part of the UrbanPhotoFest 2017 'Cartographies' exhibition curated by Urbiquity, residency details on the Urbiquity website.
