Urgent PODR - DOGS

"Urgent" was created to help advocate for NYC's death row dogs at NYC ACC. What started as a desperate attempt to save some dogs turned into an enormous community of caring people, just as outraged as we are. Together, we are fighting to reform the NYC shelter system and save the thousands of adoptable animals being needlessly destroyed each year. The battle is long and the list of casualties continues to climb but we will not give up… not until there are none. www.urgentpodr.org

When Urgent was started, things were very different. The NYC ACC sent an EMAIL to New Hope Partners, showing all the animals that were at risk of dying at 6AM the following morning. They warned that it could not be shared or the New Hope Partner could lose their ability to take animals....

TO BE DESTROYED 03/05/18 A volunteer writes: Peggy May. The girl so nice we named her twice. It’s fitting that our beautiful girl has double the names, as I have double the praise to sing of her. First, there’s her obvious beauty. A gorgeous, grey ghost with ears like doves perched atop her head and a coat so soft you’ll find your eyes falling closed every single time you pet her. But little Peggy is far from an untouchable piece of art, masterpiece though she is. She is the wiggliest, silliest, goofiest, loveliest, most lovey-dovey, snuggly, cuddly girl you’ll ever know. Good luck sitting alone when our munchkin is nearby. Peggy sees every lap as an open invitation and every pair of arms as parentheses just waiting to hold her. And how lucky that makes you. Because to have a bad day, a sour moment, or a cloud-filled sky just isn’t a possibility with this superstar in your orbit. Peggy May comes to us as a stray so much of her past is unknown. I know she is a beautiful walker, a well-mannered taker of treats, and one of the most people-loving creatures I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. In fact Peggy is such a people pup that she would prefer to be your one and only, the sole furry apple of your eye. But with a shimmering light that shines this bright, trust me – you’ll never be wanting for another. Peggy would do best with an experienced family who can help further her socialization with other pups but without any others in the home for now. And one with plenty of laps for her to squeeze her way on to, and plenty of arms to hold her tight.Peggy May. So nice we named her twice. And double the sweetness, fun, and love to give some lucky someone for the rest of their life. Peggy May is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

TO BE DESTROYED 03/03/18 – A volunteer writes: Cherry Berry is everyone’s baby, a shy but affectionate sweetheart with wistful eyes and a heart made for loving. You just want to hug her and tell her everything is going to be alright and being the easy to handle gal she is, Cherry will gracefully accept your embrace. She arrived with fantastic reviews from her former family where she grew up alongside small kids and lived with a Chihuahua, all of whom she treated as gently as you’d expect, and she’s good with cats too, though she might chase them if they bring out the claws! Cherry loves to run and play with plush toys and balls, is a fine leash walker, already crate trained and always happy to share her toys or food. After a nervous start in Care Center playgroup she’s relaxed and opened up and now you’ll find her tail wagging happily as she engages in soft, bouncy play with her big boy counterparts. Cherry’s an affectionate, gentle soul searching for a soulmate who understands that while it might take her a little while to settle into a new family, once she does there’s no limit to the depths of her love and loyalty. Come meet her at our Manhattan Care Center and get ready to fall head over heels in love!

TO BE DESTROYED 03/03/18 A volunteer writes: So quiet in her kennel, her tail starts to wag as I unlatch her door. Easily leashed we head outside where going potty was her first priority so she is likely housebroken. Showing off lovely leash manners, CC (I give nicknames to all my friends) ignores other dogs we pass on our walk. As we walk I get a chance to admire her pristine coat, and pleasantly round figure; she’s clearly been well taken care of before joining us. Off leash in a pen she’s happy to join me on the bench, snuggling close, and although a bit shy giving kisses, and when I invited her down to play she let me know cuddling on the bench was her first choice! So sweet! And sweet is the operative word here, as she’s soft and easy, happy to make a new human friend. Although she was a bit anxious when she first joined us, it’s noted in her behavior assessment that “Dog leans into the assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth”. CC is meltingly delicious, ready to find her place by your side, forever, and ever and ever.

TO BE DESTROYED 03/01/18: A volunteer writes: Gotham, such a big name for this little tyke! His behavior assessment states the following: “Gotham is social and enthusiastic with all staff, consistently soft and wiggly.” What a perfect description and I second that! Sweet, wiggly, friendly, ready to hang out in my lap and give enthusiastic kisses (and yes, sometimes a few loving nibbles), he’s all tail wags and happiness. And he’s a snorter too, love that! Although too skinny in my opinion, and with a coat that needs some TLC (better nutrition will go a long way), he has an elegant prance to his step as if he was the best looking dog on the planet. His fabulous personality sure makes him seem that way. Everyone we meet is an immediate friend, he shows off his perfect sit for a treat, has the cutest little smile and a great whirlybird tail that never stops. Gotham pottied outside on our walk, but we’re told by his previous owner that he had accidents in the home, although we don’t know how often he was walked. He’s been social and playful with males and females in group play, but ignores other dogs that passed us. He lived with young children and played hard, is well behaved when left home alone, loves chew bones, and knows sit and paw. If Gotham were a human he’s the person you’d want at your party, greeting everyone, happy to see and make friends with all, working the room and enjoying it all. He’s the dog you’ll want to come home too, happy to see you, greeting you as if you’d been gone for days, and ready to wiggle his way into a cuddle. A lifetime of cuddles with Gotham is just ‘what the doctor ordered’. Come meet him today!
