One day in 2013, the photographer and filmmaker Masaaki Miyazawa stumbled upon the Shikinen Sengu, a Shinto ceremony practiced once every 20 years, at Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture. For the past 1,300 years, a shrine pavilion is rebuilt for the purposes of renewing the shrine structure and transmitting traditional Japanese construction techniques to the next generation. Instantly captivated and inspired by the sacred relationship between humans and nature in Ise Shrine’s ritual, Miyazawa traveled to Japan’s sacred forests, mountains, and coasts to film and document the lives of people and their religious practices which are still deeply intertwined with nature. Join us and a delegation from Ise City to witness Miyazawa’s travels across Japan in the documentary Umi Yama Aida (Between Mountains and Oceans). A panel discussion with the filmmaker Miyazawa, representatives from Ise, and USC faculty will follow the screening. A reception immediately following the discussion will be hosted by the Center at the University Club.
