I’m from Cyprus 🇨🇾 And from the time I can remember, every single year I have been watching eurovision, even when I was about to have my university admission exams. I am always rooting for Italy 🇮🇹, especially the past few years they have been on their A game. Also, Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 never ceases to amaze me 💚❤💙 One of the greatest and fun performances was Sarbel’s “Yiassou Maria” with Greece 🇬🇷, simply unforgettable!

I’m literally posting this because I thought it was a total jam when I was like 6, we’d listen to it in the car on the way to school, eventually the CD it was on (yeah, the CD) was lost to history, and the damn song haunted my memory for years on end. And finally I found it again.

Can’t believe the world’s first pet cat was in Cyprus. The cat was found in a tomb at the archaeological site of Shillokourambos, Cyprus. Because there are no native feline species on Cyprus, experts believe the creature may have been brought to the island from Asia Minor. The cat was found in a 9,500 year old tomb, and was probably killed so it could be buried with it’s owner. Scientists believe that the cat may not have necessarily been domesticated, but rather a wild cat someone had trained and was keeping as a pet. Regardless, it is still the world’s oldest pet cat. Tests revealed that the cat probably looked most similar to this wildcat, felix sylvestris lybica, which is called the Near Eastern wildcat or the African wildcat and lives in parts of West Asia and North Africa.

a retired british woman owns a house near my yiayia’s. this british lady visits my yiayia every so often, and while my yiayia prepped little plates of food or whatever i was talking to this woman.  she found out i’m from NY, told me i sound “too posh” to be from NY (and was SUPER surprised by how i spoke), said she was pro brexit, then mentioned cypriots needing to build “proper houses” i told my nouna what happened and needless to say she was fucking furious.

Kormakitis was once the hub of Cyprus’s Maronite minority, descendants of Syrian and Lebanese Christians who spoke Sanna, a unique dialect of Arabic influenced by the Aramaic spoken by Jesus.

The language is now severely endangered, according to UNESCO.
