i’ve just been notified that unless i have $674 by this monday, my family and i will be put out. our landlord is bullying us into signing a new lease with new agreements in it. i was asked to sign it on the spot with no prior notice, and naturally i asked if i could read it over before signing it, which resulted in my landlord becoming abusive and yelling at me for not just signing it. not to mention the fact that he calmly had a gun next to him on his couch while he was yelling at me to sign the lease, which i can only take as a threat.

since then, he has been trying to strong-arm me into either signing the lease without being able to read it or being evicted. if i have a past due balance (which i do) it will only make it easier for him to evict us.

my landlord is notoriously abusive and has repeatedly forced my hand into doing things that i don’t want. he has entered my apartment without my permission or prior notice, and has taken months to fix even minor things. our apartment suffered gunshot damage nearly two years ago and he has yet to even come and patch up the bullet holes. i’ve been yelled at, disrespected, and ignored, and had to endure my landlord’s racially charged abuse towards his employees.

i’ve spent over $5,000 in the past year to repair/remedy things that he won’t fix. i had to use money i don’t have to buy and install two huge air conditioners because previously, we had no method of temperature control in the apartment, not even heat. that kind of money spending sets me back in my expenses, and i’m left unable to pay my bills. i have two jobs and i am a full time student and i still can’t keep up. as of right now, we don’t have a refrigerator and that’s something else we’ll have to foot the bill for.

i want to find another place, but until i pay the $674 past due balance, my hands are tied.

if you have an idea of what we can do to legally take on my landlord in the meantime, please let me know. i need all the advice i can get.
