Adowarim Lugu-zuri, CEO, Wazuri Ghana Limited, sees untapped opportunity in Ghanaâs coconut industry
Her journey from start-up entrepreneur to being the CEO of Wazuri Ghana Limited, a company providing employment to more than 30 direct and indirect staff through the growing and large-scale commercial sales of coconut, is one underpinned by constant research, investigation and swift action. This becomes clear when she tells the story of how coconut became the focus of her business vision.
How did the business grow into what it is today?
Look for #zuricoconut on Facebook today and you will see a vibrant community page with regular updates portraying customers enjoying the products and clearly showing that an agricultural industry in essence, can be merged with a lifestyle brand.
Lugu-zuri states that it took four years to get the business profitable and to a point where they today provide on a retail and wholesale basis to the corporate, professional and working classes. The aim is to make Zuri Coconut a product of choice for these target markets.

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in Africa
Indeed, WhatsApp has been key to driving internet uptake in Africa. In Zimbabwe, the app was responsible for about half of all internet data last year. Both Facebook and WhatsAppâs over-the-top services have also been responsible for a decline in mobile revenue growth. And Facebook also recently rolled out WhatsApp Business, a standalone app targeting small business owners across Africa, India, and Brazil. E-commerce retailers have also been utilizing it to engage customers and efficiently execute returns and manage failed deliveries.

Kumawood: Ghanaâs burgeoning film industry in Kumasi
In the early 1990s, Naana Hayford, Emmanuel Armah, Augustine Abbey (Idikoko), Grace Nortey, Kwame Owusu (late) and many others began to act in the film industry that was dominated by Accra based actors and producers. The movies were produced mainly in English.
Popular Kumasi based producer and CEO of Miracle Films, Samuel Kwesi Nyamekye profiling his work revealed how the Kumawood film industry gradually evolved. His ascent to fame very much intertwined with the emergence of the Twi movie industry.
He established, Miracle Films in 1998 and produced his first English movie âBe Vigilantâ same year, but it wasnât commercially successful, he said.
His second work, âExpectationâ was an improvement. Subsequently, he produced Time, which was a hit.
It marked the turning point in his career. His first work in Twi was Asoreba. With over 200 movies to his credit, the prolific director has produced, Kae Dabi, Abro, Nnipa Ye bad, Kumasi Yonko among others.
According to him, he mentored stars like Naana Hayford, Martha Joyce Arthur, Awo Yaa Agyeiwaa, Sabi Debra, Mary Afriyie Forson, Portia Asare Boateng, Raph Samawo, Emelia Brobbey, Gloria Agyemang and Mercy Asiedu. Â
The new kid on the block, Asare Bediako is part of the Kumasi film making business and has produced widely acknowledged films like Boys Abre, Sure Banker, Aban Bosea. Osita Iheme featured in Boys Abre.
Worthy of mention are other directors, Frank Fifi Gharbhin, Theophilus Amoabeng, Kofi Asamoah, Jackson Bentum, Isaiah Kofi Appiah, Samuel Akwasi Badu, James Aboagye and James Agyemang.
The Twi industry explores contemporary African issues like barrenness, marriage, family, polygamy. The movies also examine topical issues. Some of the plots are woven around these topics like politics, galamsey, vigilante, crime, terrorism, occultism, Advanced Fee Fraud (sakawa) and so on.
The contemporaneity of the Twi movies is one of the factors attributable to the overwhelming patronage by Ghanaians. The English genre is virtually non-existent while the local movies continue to thrive immensely.
An inherent part of The Living In A Tropical Country Experienceâą is knowing way too many mosquito namesÂ
Think itâs a joke? Off the top of my head
Aedes Aegypti: transmissor of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. Basically a bitch. More hated nationwide than the coach who lost to Germany
Anopheles Gambiae: transmits Malaria which is one of the oldest known diseases to humankind. Nobody has killed it. Nobody ever will
Haemagogus Leucoceleanos: transmissor of Yellow Fever in its most common form. Though the recent outbreak is in urban areas and caused by Aedes Aegypti. Told you it was a bitch
Culex Quinquefasciatus: its bite causes Elephantiasis which BASICALLY SWELLS YOUR BODY PARTS TO FIVE TIMES THEIR SIZE ITS LIKE A HELL CURSE EXCEPT ITS REAL google it if you have the guts
Culex Pipiens: The common mosquito found in everyoneâs homes. 65% of national causes for cursing outside of stadiums. Mass killing these dipshits is a national sport
can absolutely relate to this. thereâs a chapter in one of my old science books dedicated to diseases transmitted by mosquitoes
