The Magical Girl has broken out of the lab. She's clearly not in control of her own faculties, as she follows a voice calling out to her while she breaks out of what seems to be a highly secure testing facility. Makes me curious about what the story around the character could be. :3c

The vibe reminds me of 零度 (REIDO) feat. Kaai Yuki by Yoshida Yasei. I'm such a sucker for these darker themes. Especially when the song has a lot of dramatic tension built into the instrumentation through contrasting dynamic sounds (loud/quiet, intense/gentle, etc).

"When you translate Hanbunko into English, you get both 'share' and 'split' from it. It's kinda cool that one Japanese word can have two conflicting meanings. I don't really know tho lol" - TL of Eipu's comment in the description

God I love Eipu and this particular song feeds me so well. I especially love how Eipu played with the "sharing" and "splitting" concept. HANBUNKO is more directly translatable as "halfsies", the literal TL is "Half-Section-Piece". The messaging of "no matter how hard it is, we're in this together" is really sweet...despite how menhera the surrounding tone is across the song and the MV.

The MV def sets a tone of fan and idol keeping each other going- both of them struggling with severe mental health issues. idk. it's dark but uplifting- I guess it's just one of those things that's like gallow's humour.

This is such a jam and if you follow The Amazing Digital Circus, it feels like a Caine inspired song. I thought maybe it was just me bc the finale is coming out soon, but the MV kinda reinforced that as well as the description outright using malware as a keyword for the theming lmao

This song was produced for a Vocaloid Rock event, 2026ボカロック. Peace Punk lives up to the name with a pop-rock song about being your best despite the challenges.

I was introduced to Peace Punk via 人間界隈 (Human Community) which is also baller AF, Teto and Reggae was not a combo I expected to happen upon.

Carol of the NEW! Ones feat. Satoishi Yuka by Fujiwara Hagane

Have you heard about our NEW lord and saviour, Magical Girl Saotishi Yuka?!

Yuka is a 17yo girl who's scared to grow up. She's a shy girl who hides in the back corner of the classroom reading niche novels, but she can also transform into a magical girl! However, this magical girl is a little strange as her power makes people love her and her mental age is significantly reduced when transformed, making her very naive and innocent. She has two variations: Bud (non-transformed, normal girl) and Blossom (transformed, magical girl). Her Sword is named, Dada-chan, who can take on the form of an adult man. He also has a voice bank as he is the male variation of Yuka's voice.

This work is part of a debut compiled album to promote the UTAU project, Satoishi Yuka (里石ユカ). Each piece is a chapter exploring different themes on "Love", this one had the theme of "Dominating Love" (支配的愛). Where Yuka, using her magical girl powers, makes the people love and worship her, until she takes over the whole country! The song is catchy and the MV depicts her basically becoming an all-powerful god in a warped, eldritch way. It's so good~! You can view the whole compilation album in this Youtube Playlist.

Aside from the compilation album, Satoishi Yuka is a solo production by Kuroiwa Shuuta (黒岩秀太) who is the voice provider, character designer, illustrator, and general producer of the project. She is free to use as an UTAU vocal synth for non-commercial use. There is a VOICEVOX product in the works. More information via the official website can be found below.

Scroll Zombie feat. Kasane Teto by Stitch

A cute upbeat but chill Teto song about being a social media addict, but this time it's about being comforted and finding solace in your little screen. :3

The lyrics are a fun Japanese-English mashup. It's so fun and I'd argue one step removed from being a pure ear worm on the fact that it's got such a chill vibe. The MV also very kindly reinforces the lyrics too.

I know I've personally come across a lot of songs about dopamine/SNS/screen addiction lately, but this one's a nice palate cleanser with how comforting it is. It feels like I'm enjoying a chill, rainy day inside after being over stimulated by unbridled sunlight the days before.

I feel like most people's point of reference for Yi Xi's voice bank is Butcher Vanity, and this is a great counterpoint to it. It's very pop-y (this is Amala who gave us Daidaidaidaikirai y'all) but also ballad-y. I absolutely LOVE the message in the lyrics thought it felt like a pep talk, it feels reassuring...it's got that rebellious je-ne-sais-quoi that I'm a sucker for. :3c

@vocaloidcurated posted a top faves inspired by a reddit post...and I love an excuse to ramble about my faves. So these are songs I've put on repeat many times!

MEIKO: 番凩 - hinayukki It's a duet with KAITO, but it's one of the more impressionable MEIKO songs. I love hinayukki's sound, traditional and epic story-based songs mainly using either KAITO or MEIKO with beautiful tuning in a more traditional singing style. 焔姫 is also a banger featuring MEIKO, my most beloved song from them though is 忘時人 featuring KAITO.

KAITO: 七色世界 - カイミュP Discovered this song on NND back when in 2012 as that was when I was first trying to find new vocaloid songs on NND after working through all the stuff I could find on Youtube back then. I'm a SUCKER for songs about the singer's inner world coming to life with colour, like Qualia by HachiP.

Hatsune Miku: Boss Death - 磯P Also an oldie that I ADORE. Originally posted in 2008 but I think I probably discovered it around 2009/2010 and was just SMITTEN. The hero has saved the world, now she's a liability- all she wants is to retire in the mountains, but the world won't let her rest. GOD. ITS SO EDGY AND SO GOOD.

Kagamine Rin: 新人類 - まらしぃ＆じんさん Oh-Oh-Ah-Ah, shinjinrui is just an anthem fr. I keep thinking it's been around since long before 2023.

Kagamine Len: Ego Renegade Boy - FLAVOR FOLEY Honestly, I'm not a super big Len fan. Most of my favourite songs that feature him are duo or groups...and I wanted to try and find a solo song...and THEN I REMEMBERED THIS BANGER THAT RELEASED RECENTLY. LFG FLAVOR FOLEY GOATS IN THE EN SCENE WOOHOO!! I'm actually so grateful I've gotten to see the EN vocaloid producer scene BOOM. So many people who also grew up on Vocaloid now have the skills and money to produce their own works and it's so amazing to see. <3

Ui's voice bank) reminds me of Slender man and FNAF, the creepypasta and nostalgic horror that really hit it big in the early 2010s.

An absolute ear worm. Similar theme as Brainrot by Tokyo Manaka but high energy reflecting the song's core theme of having a Screen Addiction.

The MV really reinforces the lyrics between the breaks where the character is going through withdrawal and as they get a higher high on the dopamine from their phone's screen.

White Crow by 悠ぺぇ/Yupe

『“Why ignore me? I'm special." That's just your delusion. I’ll prove my existence, I’m a white crow.』

Yupe is a new Japanese Vocaloid Producer who started last year, and I'm absolutely obsessed with their works so far. 蝮の卵 (Mamushi no Tamago/Viper's Egg) is an absolute ear worm, but White Crow quickly became my own personal anthem last Fall.

The producer describes it in the description of focusing on themes like desire for recognition, inferiority complex, and self-hate in a Dark, Aggressive Electro Vocaloid song.

There's a lot of fantastic Teto growls and vocal fry done with the tuning. The lyrics sound like someone mocking the wannabes who never make it while also voicing their own aspirations- an optimistic dreamer at heart with the mind of a cynical realist. I was drawn in by the alternative sounds (vocal fry, dynamic synthetic instrumentation, Teto, the punk MV aesthetics) and ended up relating so much to the lyrics that I probably listened to it on repeat for a few hours a week for a while.

Resuming Activity

I had a lot of life™️happen since I was last posting and lately I've found my groove back a bit. So I hope to start bringing some more recommendations here! This started with a tiktok acc, with the tumblr blog being a place to catalogue. But I don't think I will continue with the tiktok account unless I hit some kind of translating/editing god-flow state.

I really, really want to share more amazing music that non-JP users may not find or help make JP-only pieces more accessible to non-JP users.

I've loved Vocaloid since 2009, so it's a major passion of mine. Learning Japanese enabled me to try my hand at translation. Now I am living in Japan for the time being, so hopefully I can bring a more complete picture to my translation and help explain more cultural nuances when possible.

I say that last bit in part because of recent Vocaloid music using heavy slang or highly abstract lyrics that result in poor translation attempts by fans relying on only Machine Translation Tools who don't have strong enough comprehension yet to either contextualize properly for an English Translation or get hung up on a concept as if it's more important to the rest of the lyrics than it is (which imo is a VERY relatable experience going between high context to low context languages).
