Sega Europe & Police Raid: Summary of Events Thus Far
In April 2025, Sega Europe's relocation to London initiated a complex legal chain of events when the company hired the waste management firm Waste to Wonder to clear out its abandoned headquarters. During the move, piles of hardware were left on the floor with broad instructions to "get rid of all of it." The discarded items, which included development kits and cartridges containing unreleased code, was handled by a subcontractor and transported to an export scrapyard. It was at this yard that Darius Khan, a scrap dealer, purchased the items to resell.
Khan listed the hardware for sale and the Video Game Preservation Museum reserved the lot for £61,000 (about $82,000). Subsequently, Khan was surveilled by the private investigator firm Fusion 85, retained by Sega, and the City of London Police conducted a 7 AM raid on Khan's home on July 14, 2025. While the initial arrest was for money laundering, the legal narrative shifted over several months to include allegations of intellectual property crime and the possession of counterfeit goods. Khan maintains he bought the items in good faith as "discarded rubbish," pointing to the fact that Sega had intentionally drilled or hammered some of the hardware in the same pile as evidence of their intent to dispose of the entire lot.
The investigation has been complicated by evidence suggesting corporate negligence and procedural irregularities. Internal crisis documents from the e-waste contractor, which were accidentally leaked to journalists at Gamers Nexus, reveal they investigated whether "client inventory control negligence" by Sega was the root cause of the hardware's release, even as Sega alleged to police that the items were stolen from a room "out of scope." Furthermore, the warrants used for the raid contained significant discrepancies. The Occupier's Copy and Applicant's Copy reportedly featured different descriptions of the search area, effectively expanding the scope of the raid from specific units to an entire building without the judge’s original intent being clear to the occupier.
The case has also drawn scrutiny toward the close relationship between police and private corporations. The City of London Police's Intellectual Property Crime Unit operates in direct collaboration with the UK Interactive Entertainment Association (UKIE), a trade group directed by higher-ups from companies like Sega and Nintendo. The UK Intellectual Property Office funds IP enforcement with the police while being described as an important ally to the industry trade group. This alliance is further evidenced by the search warrants specifically authorized employees from Sega and Fusion 85 to enter the private home alongside police officers, leading to concerns about the delegation of state power to private interests.
Khan refuses to admit guilt for a crime he did not commit, and maintains a firm stance that he is a victim and scapegoat of a narrative designed to protect corporate interests at his expense. He views the situation not as a criminal act of theft, but as a legitimate business transaction involving discarded e-waste. Khan maintains that even if the items were mishandled by a subcontractor, he had no knowledge of any alleged theft. Khan has also alleged human rights violations during his time in custody, including being held for extended periods without food (despite legally allowed at least one meal) and being subjected to sensory deprivation interrogation tactics in a room with no clocks and excessive air conditioning. Although no charges have been made, Khan has remained under criminal investigation.
