Whatās your favourite type of plant?
This is a very terribly hard question because I can find a lot of plants really beautiful. Even plants I didn't use to really like the look of (grasses mostly) I've started finding a new appreciation for as I see them more and more.
I'm currently really enamored with String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii), particularly the variegated kind because they have such a nice pink to them. I have my very small cuttings sitting next to my kitchen sink in the window so i get to see them every day and stare at their tiny pink little leaves. Can't wait for them to get bigger and hang!!
10 Lessons Iāve Learned From My Houseplants: a PSA to anyone who thinks they canāt keep plants alive
Mix hydrogen peroxide into the water you give them! I mix it into the watering can and typically use approximatly 2tsps hydrogen peroxide per 36oz of water. It kills off pests in the soil and will help prevent root rot if you accidentally over water. It also adds more oxygen to the water, and plants really need that! And use room temperature water unless you know for sure a plant likes cold water. For most plants, water that is too hot or too cold will send it into shock and can kill it.
Bottom water bottom water bottom water. Place the plant in a bowl or tray and then pour water into the bowl. The plant will only soak up what it needs, and when the top of the soil barely damp itās got enough! It also helps keep the soil from compacting which allows air to get to the roots, which helps prevent root rot and gives the plant the oxygen it needs.
If you think itās thirsty, feel the leaves. The best way to tell if a plant needs water is by checking its leaves. Get to know what the leaves feel like when you first buy it, as it is probably well watered. When you feel itās been long enough between waterings check the leaves. Does it feel normal? Good, it doesnāt need water for now! Does it feel easily bendable, thinner, softer, or squishier than normal? Give it some water! Remember that it is easier for a plant to come back from being UNDER watered than over watered. If you feel unsure, give it another day or two.
If you still think itās thirsty after feeling its leaves, feel the soil. Stick your finger down into the soil about 1-2 inches. If the dirt feels wet or damp donāt water it! Wait until the soil is dry 2-3 inches down. (This does not apply to succulents and cacti. Typically wait for the soil to be dry all the way through and leave it dry until the plant shows signs of thirst.
Baby plants are WAY harder to care for than larger plants because they do not have much of an established root system. Its best if you try bigger plants when first starting out (4-6in pots) because they will be more forgiving of mistakes.
Light! Light is one of the most important things to a plant, thatās how they get their energy! Look up the light conditions for a plant BEFORE you buy it, (even if its just a quick google in the store) so you know if you have the right lighting for it. You can do everything right with watering and caring for a plant but if its in the wrong light it will die.
Higher humidity is more important in the winter than in the summer (unless it is a plant that needs a lot of humidity like a fern). While you may not have to worry about humidity in the summer, using a heater in the winter dries out the air in your home very fast. If possible get a small humidifier for your plants. You donāt need anything fancy, I have a $10 one from Target and it does the job fine.
Donāt worry if your plants stop growing in the winter, just like trees loose their leaves, plants go into hibernation too and do not produce as much new growth. During these cold winter months (and spring⦠and fallā¦.) donāt water as often. Since they donāt grow as much, they donāt need near as much water. Do not use fertilizer during this period either, the plant does not need it and more than likely the fertilizer will just burn the plantās roots since it wonāt absorb it.
Try to give them individual love and attention. Pet their leaves! Give them lil kissies! Play nice music for them! The best way to care for a plant is to learn what it wants individually. Name them if this helps and donāt treat them all the same! Learning what each plant wants is the most rewarding part of horticulture. You can have two of the exact same plant and they will have different needs, its incredible! Let their little personalities shine through.
Donāt give up if you follow all these and still kill a plant! Plants are hard and sometimes their instinct is to just,,,, die. Donāt trust someone who says theyāve never killed a plant, theyāre lying, plants die. Try again and be patient with yourself and your plant friends.
I love this post so much. I think it is important to remember that plant care should be fun. It feels like I am always learning more about a plantās personality (read: care requirements). There is always a learning curve, and some plants will simply die no matter what you do. But it is important to never give up! :) Its rough losing the first few plants (and ones later on) but once you get into a routine with the plant friend the new growth is so rewarding. TLDR; I wanted to reblog this to share some plant love :)Ā
This is for the people who find small plants adorable.
Edited my pfp for pride month :)
Today, like every day, is a mighty fine day to be asexual. I hope the rest of y'all are having a good day out there.
Itās not ace awareness/appreciation week or anything like that, this has just been on my mind for a while.
I think itās time for more people to realize how diverse the asexual community really is because it seems to me like everyone has this very limited and stereotypical understanding of what it means to be asexual.
So shoutouts to my sex-favorable aces that feel like they shouldnāt be apart of this community and feel like they have to question their asexuality. NOTE: this used to say āsex-positiveā but then I realized I misused the term. Sex positive is someone who respects peoples decision to have or not have sex, while someone who is sex favorable is someone who enjoys having sex. Sorry!
Shoutouts to my sex-neutral aces who really could care less about sex. I feel you guys.
Shoutouts to my sex-repulsed aces that have to live in a world that truly shoves sex in your face and plays it off as some sort ofĀ ānecessityā.
Shoutouts to asexual lesbians/wlw who also live in a world that sexualizes and fetishizes wlw and lesbian relationships. Itās something that I struggle with everyday.
Shoutout to my ace guys. You all are often overlooked and donāt get the representation you deserve because of menāsĀ āinherentā sexualityĀ
Shoutout to my aro aces. You guys are so cool and it sucks that so many people donāt care or even try to understand you all.
Shoutout to my enby/trans aces who have to figure out if your dislike for certain parts of your body is thanks to gender dysphoria or asexuality
Shoutout to my POC aces who have to live in a world that already doesnāt appreciate your contributions and presence, and who have to deal with all the sexual stereotypes that are associated with who you are outside of your sexuality.
Shoutout to all my alloromantic aces who have to go through the tiresome process of trying to explain to everyone around you that you still are attracted to some people, just not in that way
Shoutout to my demisexuals and graysexuals who are so often overlooked and have to go through an even more extensive process to explain your sexuality.
Shoutouts to my aces that dress in ways that donāt fit theĀ āasexual lookā. I know how hard it can be to overcome those stereotypes and express yourself how you want, so you guys are awesome.
Shoutout to my aces that do dress more modestly. You guys arenāt conforming to the stereotype. You guys are dressing the way you want. So donāt let anyone try to shame you for that.
Shoutout to ALL MY ACES because we are so strong and powerful and diverse and if anyone tells you otherwise I will personally beat them up
I LOVE YOU GUYS and if any of you ever want to talk, my asks are open
(Also sorry if I missed any; I did this like 30 min after I woke up so my brain is still kinda garbled)
whoops pride month 2021 starts tomorrow so here's my hot takes (TM)
- the only people who are NOT queer are people who are cisgender AND heterosexual AND heteromantic (edit: AND monogamous. poly people belong at pride too!)
- this means that aspec (asexual and aromatic aligned identities) are, in fact, lgbt/queer
- bisexuals and pansexuals have literally no reason to fight and (saying this as a trans person) neither are transphobic
- gender has no rules, and not a single person on this planet is owed an explanation of your identity, pronouns, or gender presentation (feminine, masculine, androgynous, or anything else), trans or not.
- not being sexually attracted to trans people is NOT transphobic, but that does not mean it gives you immunity from being transphobic (ex: lesbians not being attracted to trans women / straight girls not being attracted to trans men is absolutely fine, but when things like "because they're not a 'real' woman/man" are said, THATS when it becomes transphobic.)
- other queer people are NOT the enemy
- people have the right to be uncomfortable by the word "queer", but the use of the word as a common label and positive thing is insanely important. also terfs are a major reason people consider it a slur
