To tell the truth in love means to tell it with concern not only for the truth that is being told but with concern also for the people it is being told to.
Frederick Buechner
A seeker’s story is theirs to tell—no one else’s.
Spiritual Discovery, Catherine C. Tran & Sandra Hughes Boyd
As a spirituality nerd, I love to read books and articles on the subject—always with an eye toward making the whole thing more approachable, both for myself and for those who come to me for spiritu…
I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world. I believe that they are all God-given and I believe that they were necessary for the people to whom these religions were revealed. And I believe that if only we could all of us read the scriptures of the different faiths from the standpoints of the followers of these faiths, we should find that they were at bottom all one and were all helpful to one another.

Progressive spirituality is...well at home in a particular liberal and mystical strand of western religion

Progressive Spirituality
Progressive spirituality has, according to Gordon Lynch, emerged out of four key concerns:
the desire for an approach to religion and spirituality that is appropriate for modern, liberal societies,
the rejection of patriarchal forms of religion and the search for religious forms that are authentic and liberating for women,
the move to re-sacralize science (particularly quantum physics and contemporary theories of cosmology), and
the search for a nature-based spirituality that will motivate us to try to avert the impending ecological catastrophe.
Wonder is the only adequate launching pad for exploring this fullness, this wholeness, of human life.
Eugene Peterson
Spiritual companioning gives priority to individuals' current experience of God.
Spiritual Companioning
"Living without mystery means knowing nothing of the mystery of our own life, nothing of the mystery of another person, nothing of the mystery of the world; it means passing over our own hidden qualities and those of others and the world. It means remaining on the surface, taking the world seriously only to the extent that it can be calculated and exploited, and not going beyond the world of calculation and exploitation. Living without mystery means not seeing the crucial processes of life at all and even denying them." .
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In yesterday’s post I quoted Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, who wrote in The Huffington Post that for “liberal religion in America, this [the election of Trump] is our moment.” I also shar…
"The awareness of a spiritual tradition that reaches through the centuries gives one a certain feeling of security in the face of all transitory difficulties."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Like many of my friends and colleagues, I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to make sense of how the presidential election turned out. I see this as a spiritual task because spirituality is,…
Faith is not fundamentally about one's beliefs but about one's commitments.
George Kimmich Beach
Whoever does not know the austere blessedness of waiting—that is, of hopefully doing without—will never experience the full blessing of fulfillment.
