A bit of an underrated moment, which makes sense if you know the context. But what I like about this moment is how “off” it feels. Like you’re left feeling like “that’s it?” and the scene comes across as shallow. Despite Xena’s clear emotion, there’s a lack of warmth and feeling here. 

And for a brief moment, you might wonder if Lucy and Renée were phoning it in. But then the reveal happens and this scene makes more sense. You realize that Lucy and Renée actually managed to create a different dynamic here. This scene compared with the actual reunion scene is like night and day. And yet its the same actors. But not the same characters which makes all the difference.

Xena and Gabrielle would have a reunion that’s filled with love, but this is not Gabrielle.
