Andrew Solomon

I have to admit, I am biased. It took some time after reading The Autism Rights Movement before my mind was able to link the writer to one of the most impactful Ted Talks I’ve ever watched. He is one of my favorite writers and speakers. An authoritative writer, Solomon, while not having background on this topic previously he admits he did gain information and context through his interviews. The information from those is credible. He admits he has his own “neurodiversties”, struggled with mental illness and while that is different from the point of his topic he understands many of the impacts living a life with such a condition can have. The overall purpose of his article was to analyze and come to some conclusions on this movement. In the process, he unearthed the complexities of the topic and left them for the reader to ponder, slightly more enlightened than at the end of the first section.

Research Topic

Coming upon the sunset of my college career the effect of college on individuals futures weighs on me. I am at the point where I need to determine what type of education will benefit me most. Whether that be higher academic institutions, trade school, or nonprofit organizations. We’re all here to become productive contributing members of society (probably) in the most effective and efficient way possible and my doubts are pulling me toward looking into the topic.

The State of Dates

Amanda Hess’s response article, ‘Technology Killed Courtship. Good Riddance.’ Responds to another article published in the New York times about the effects of “hook up culture” and technology on millennials’ dating game. Hess looks at the tone of the Time’s article and responds from a different perspective. Pointing out the theme of “chivalry is dead” and we don’t know how to communicate or invest in each other anymore. Hess’s argument paints how individuals portray themselves in modern social scenes differently compared to 50 years ago. Hess analyzes whereas the Time’s article assigns meaning in relation to social interactions on relationships today. This provides a more observant and unbiased approach to interpreting how millennials create relationships today.

Response to NPR’s ‘The Real CSI’

From the start, the title pulls you in based on assumed knowledge that the reader has some concept of CSI and that it stands to be corrected. Pathos is used predominantly throughout the article, holding the reader’s attention. Statistics were followed by cringe-worthy individual accounts and contrasted with what is presented on CSI based shows. Logos was used in their presentation of facts and statistics (I didn’t fact check them) along with quotes from experts. Overall the articles purpose was to persuade though it floundered in the last section when presenting methods of improving the flaws and corruption in the system. The effort put in these last few paragraph did not compare to previous, hurried and underdeveloped making for a weak close.
