Sonya Massey was a paranoid-schizophrenic woman who turned to the police when she was scared and suspected an intruder inside of her home; she was a Black, mentally ill, woman shot dead and executed by a white police officer solely because she said "I rebuke you" over a pot of water. she was DUCKING DOWN behind a counter repeating the words "I'm sorry" as he advanced and, eventually, killed her. Sean Grayson, a white police officer, executed her.

her name was Sonya Massey. she was a human being who deserved to live. say her fucking name. Sonya Massey.

The time between she said "I rebuke you" and shots fired was less than 10 seconds.

A normal person would have been like "who even says rebuke anymore?"

A normal person would have been like "yeah some people throw things at cops. It's acceptable for him to move away."

But this guy was threatening to shoot her in the face and pointing his gun at her and fired multiple times before I even finished that first thought.

Like this guy was standing far enough away that even if she had tried to throw that pot he would have been fine.

No excuse. No reason. No mercy.

I am a Direct Support Professional who works with a woman who is schizophrenic and bipolar. She regularly sees red and entirely randomly beging swinging and punching and kicking at me.

When I took this job, I was taught de-escalation protocol, and self defense in the form of, "this is how you defend yourself without hurting the person attacking you." And "do these things to ensure your safety while also offering them comfort." I was taught ways to *safely* restrain someone if they don't stop hitting you.

I've had cups, plates, fire extinguishers, and even chairs thrown at me. I've walked away from work with a black eye, bruises across my arms and legs, and at least once a long gash on my face.

Not once have I hurt the woman I'm taking care of. I signed up for this job, for one. But for two, and most important of all, *my comfort does not matter more than her life.*

My job is to de-escalate and ensure the safety of ALL parties. My job has Inherent risk to it.

If I were to grab this woman's wrist and it left a bruise, I would be investigated by at least 3 different agencies, and either re-trained or straight up fired.

Vulnerable populace are much more likely to be handled by police using lethal force. We are taught to call police as a LAST LAST LAST resort because there's a high chance that actions they do would cause a police officer to shoot them dead.

I can handle a schizophrenic person better than the police can. I was trained for 3 weeks.

There's something inherently and grotesquely wrong with how our system works if the people brought into situations to ensure safety treat vulnerable populace with *less* patience rather than more.

Something needs to change. Something needs to change *fast.*
