Steam Bending Wood Perhaps a better way (or inexpensive...) to steam wood for bending?
my own work creeps me out sometimes
It’s a new year and with it will come an endless number of revelations, discoveries, and experiments like the Louise Bourgeois like 3D sketch I did the other day. Though I honestly did not think about her work at all while doing this…
But hey, when you don’t know what to do, look for inspiration and keep on going! Or better yet, take a break, rest your body and soul. Time off can awake your latent ideas.
That’s why I, at last, think I know how I will begin my first Hierarchy piece :)

these troubling times…
…inspire not just movements for change, but different ways of expressing our present days. The visible and invisible hierarchical systems that surround us, identify us, are the same ones that continue to destroy us. By simply existing, we can be stripped of our dignity through disregard, restriction, objectification, discrimination, contempt, assault (and more as described in Nora Jacobson’s 2012…

Help Scientists Understand Dementia
Help Scientists Understand Dementia
Design Indaba shared a story about a game, called Sea Hero Quest, that can help scientists better understand dementia. “Considering the amount of time people spend gaming, scientists and game designers developed a way to extract data and add a constructive quality to this primarily entertaining pastime. According to the Sea Hero Quest’s webpage, “By playing Sea Hero Quest for two minutes you…

…depicts hierarchy.
It’s layered in a way that protects our blood stream, transports nutrients, maintains body temperature, preserves our flesh…
The top layer, the epidermis, is what’s presented to the world. It’s the main subject line in the news, it’s a source of conflict. It’s what we pay attention to, it’s what’s given precedence despite the same functions we have right below the surface.
If the top layer is removed, how would we all exist in the world? What would we look like to each other without this hierarchical view of the skin we’re in?
“Prejudice and discrimination based on ethnicity and gender affect our thinking about other people and ourselves…which in turn can give us different opportunities and different behaviors.” – Alexandra Snellman, 2007. Social Hierarchies, Prejudice, and Discrimination.
Even our skin… ...depicts hierarchy. It's layered in a way that protects our blood stream, transports nutrients, maintains body temperature, preserves our flesh...
The Dangers of a Single Story
The Dangers of a Single Story
https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en#t-1109969 “I’ve always felt that it is impossible to engage properly with a place or a person without engaging with all of the stories of that place and that person. The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes…

A breakdown from Hennessy Youngman on How to Make ART...but it’s true...when you create, treat it like an exploration, a question, a proposition (because it’s okay to fail on your road to discovery)
This drawing exercise in particular may be never ending...but that's a challenge in itself...experiencing what develops during a creative process without the pressure of an end goal in mind
South African Fashion Week SS16 from the lens of Gerrit Hahn
While western designers reduce ‘African fashion’ to tribal clichés, there’s a whole host of native designers producing material more reflective of this diverse continent
“If you told someone the print on your bomber jacket was inspired by Europe they’d think you were making an obscure sartorial Brexit reference. Why? Because no one is stupid enough to reduce a continent to a single aesthetic. So why do it with Africa? “
