How to Earn Love and Win Fans With Non-Traditional Marketing

This article has some great examples of creative ways brands are engaging with their customers. Written in response to 2013's FunFunFun Fest in Austin, the article points out how the brands tailored their marketing to reflect the essence of the music festival as well as the unique fan-base that would be attending.  

Acts like Slayer, Sarah Silverman and Snoop Dogg headlined the event geared towards a niche crowd that's generally passionate about independent music, cross-genre legendary talent and discovering acts before they potentially hit the mainstream circuit.

Service Design Club: Collaboration Etiquette

A successful service design club meeting today! We brainstormed the good, the bad and the ugly of Collaboration. Categories that emerged were communication, ideation, group dynamics and motivation. Within each category we brainstormed possible solutions for each issue and developed a great list of ideas. Then we learned how to identify different team roles and how they relate to various behaviors. Thanks to everyone for a great meeting!

Communities are built and thrive not just on the physical spaces and facilities but also through their connectedness to the digital world. It is at this intersection that designers can bring useful thinking to bear; particularly as the maturing service design industry readies itself to attack the public service issues that dog many cities

"Smarter cities need design" says Jim Northover in his for Design Times.  The relationship between public services and service design continues to grow, and Helsinki will be the city to watch and learn from as they are in the process of recruiting three "City Designers" to work with the city staff.

This is a great interview with designer Bob Gill. My favorite part is when talks about how designers (back then and still today) can often get caught up in making something beautiful, but fail to see its purpose or origin.  He gives the example of being commisioned to design graphics for a dry cleaning business, and that the best way to choose color, shape, style, etc. is to actually go to the dry cleaner and spend a lot of time there. Observe people. Observe the environment.  Reflect that in the design.  While these are things we learning today, he was thinking this way back in the 1950’s, and actually putting into practice.
