kai’s family had never exactly come from much money, and having four kids running around made for a pretty difficult situation financially. beck being the youngest of the litter, with two older brothers and an older sister, but from a very young age he was working to contribute towards the family earnings and make the westbrook family life a little easier.
kai wasn’t exactly a difficult child, per say, but he certainly wasn’t as easy as the rest of his siblings had been at his age. still, everyone always tried their hardest with him, and it wasn’t like he ever meant to be troublesome, or just happened something. he had always been restless, easily frustrated, temperamental and prone to a tantrum.
much like every other child with undiagnosed adhd that nobody knew what to do with, kai went from hobby to hobby until one finally stuck : surfing. he had a natural talent for it, and he loved it in an instant.
during high school, always with average grades and several detentions, kai continued to put most if not all of his focus and effort into surfing.
now twenty-three and no longer having to turn to petty thievery to provide for his family, kai partakes in every local surfing competition, and sometimes even the international ones.
during the last surfing contest he took part in, kai was feeling particularly threatened by one opponent in particular, and given how much he loved the high of winning and being recognised for his talents when it came to surfing, he knew that he had to win, and he wouldn’t let anything get in his way.
