the term proshipper is not rlly used with its original meaning in mind, so when someone says they dont like proshippers i think its pretty obvious that theyre talking abt ppl who have "controversial" (😒) ships and just on that very base level i think thats more than enough of a reason. love exploring dark topics (i have hcs/interpertations that would probably send pjo fans to an early grave) love exploring fucked up relationships but the way i see proshippers talk about, say, incest and rape, is very different than that. and also often very gross and disrespectful! so thats one, and the most surface level reason
if we do keep in mind the og meaning, people who go "IM not doing the thing you deem messed up, i just support the people who do the thing you deem messed up" are not better and not much different imo
the rest comes more so from the stuff ive seen come out of that community 🤷♀️ i'd say there's a grooming issue, theres material created that seems to contribute to said issue, theres common talking points that contribute to said issue (example, painting everyone who doesnt fw proshipping as a homophobe or pro*-censorship, etc etc, when thats just not the case. ive seen multiple people talk abt how that stuff was used to groom them into the community and/or make them struggle to leave it. also ive seen 14-15 yr old kids call and brand themselves as proshippers; and ive also seen those same kids defend their weird ass grown friends when someone else points out that the weird ass grown friends in question are being weird in the kid's replies. call me crazy but that REEKS of grooming). i think theres a lot of proshippers who dont actually care about victims as much as they preach they do (same with antis, when people actually identified as that, and even though that term was dropped i still think theres people who dont fw proshippers but dont actually care about victims either) and im not gonna deny that theres victims in the community but i will say that i just hate the idea of victims trying to find a way to cope, being in the same spaces as people who only wanna use them as a shield (think uhhh transphobes and blaire white maybe?), dont care about them or what theyve been through to treat that with the care it deserves, or worse, get off on their trauma, even if indirectly. i dont like how often i see real kids being dragged into it, whether its child actors and/or their faces being used for whatever, or the loli/shotacon overlap and the loli/shota artists that get exposed for using real children as references. i dont like the way they group in being queer with all of this (the homophobia mention earlier), and i dont like how even the """ better """ proshippers who might also disagree some of the stuff i mentioned (like real kids being involved in some way for whatever, or the grooming), still ignore all of the issues in their community and continue to boil it down to "well, people dont like us because they dont know what proship means" or "well, people dont like us because we like taboo topics" when theres like, SIGNIFICANTLY bigger issues. and this one is obvious but when its pointed out that proshippers preach anti-harrassment but constantly harrass people, the go-to excuse is something like "well, its only anti-harrassment about ships..." and like im sorry if your anti-harrassment belief starts and stops at your right to write michael afton x william afton rape fics but youre still more than happy to harrass a popular creator (fanartist or of something original) because they set a boundary like "proship dni" in bio or "please dont sexualize my characters, theyre based off of me as a kid", you do not get to call yourself anti-harrassment. you are not anti-harrassment you are a bitch
