i’ve moved my snicket collection to dropbox. the google drive is still there, but i may not access it frequently enough for it to not get removed, so this is a failsafe. dropbox is also less likely to flag my files in my experience

Okay, so there's this book series. Let's call the main character Protagonist Lastname. Now, Protagonist Lastname's parents do not ever appear on page and are very rarely discussed. We are given these specific facts:
Protagonist Lastname had both a mother and a father.
Protagonist Lastname's father is named Jacob Lastname.
On the official Lastname Family Tree (aka the main family line), only one parent is labelled for Protagonist Lastname and their siblings. This parent is labelled with the initial "E." Due to context from the tree they are the one who was born with the Lastname surname.
Bearing this in mind, what is the logical assumption?
"E" is the name of Protagonist's Mother, Jacob may have taken her surname
Jacob must be a nickname/middle name and his legal name starts with "E"
