Something a bit spooky for Halloween, the ancient Japanese folklore of Nebutori or sleep fattening … this is an update of a classic illustration by Takehara Shunsensai from The Ehon Hyaku Monogatari (Picture Book of a Hundred Stories), published about 1841, which was the subject of another post of mine some months back … if you recall that post, Nebutori is a supernatural spirit that visits upon unsuspecting women who go to sleep shortly after a meal and awake from rest to find themselves dramatically heavier than before. It’s rather sexist of the spirit to only fatten women but that’s how things were I suppose in Japanese superstitions of centuries past …
