I think this is my favourite qifrey frame in the whole manga

I admire shirahama as a writer so much, she's always working in narrative mirrors and parallels and foils and sets them out there so skillfully. the scene immediately before this is tartah forcing coco to speak even as she's weeping and breaking down and trying to pull away, and here we have coco entering the scene so angry and determined but the moment qifrey expresses to her (a bit manipulatively as is his wont lol but also truthfully) that talking about this is actively hurting him, she all but makes him stop/forces him to pace himself. because she cares about him. she catches him at the kind of shitty defensive thing he's doing to push her away and she calls him out on it and he actually manages to get his adult brain back on for her to comfort her. (which includes 'yes, you're right. I'm sorry', and for all his faults I think his consistent capacity for that is one of his most redeeming and sympathetic qualities and also part of what makes him such a good teacher at the end of the day.)

as far as 'I'm literally twelve and had one of the most trauma packed days imaginable and to cap it all off I just found out my beloved mentor slash father figure has the terminal tree disease I just watched very nearly be the horrific end of my friend and he's being a bit pass agg about it tbh' goes, I think this is about as well as this conversation could have turned out haha :')

once I'm up to date with the manga I need to make a screencap post of all the times coco and agott hold hands. they'll literally find any excuse for it whenever they're next to each other and it makes my heart feel so big and warm in my chest

I’ve been really into this manga (and the wonderful anime adaptation it has), and I figured I’d make art referencing the chapters that messed me up the most first.

We don’t know just how vulnerable they’ve gotten around the other and how many times Olruggio has let Qifrey know his love is the only constant. That’s both beautiful and heartbreaking.

I love the guy qifrey actually is when he drops the 'nothing to see here :>' facade so much........ somewhere in there among all the layers is a weird prickly little bitch and I like him so much

considering this is the most Olruggio POV/direct insight we've gotten thus far in the manga... it's going to fucking kill me when we finally get to dip into his head for any length of time in the main story. I'm not ready to be in there for him looking directly at qifrey I think I'll explode

'man who is not your master thank you very much dropping the tenderest most poetic lines ever conceived about raising children and the fragile but steadfast hope it's your duty to hold on their behalf and to give on to them, even in the face of a world you know could crush that hope so easily and thoughtlessly'............

then there's the fact that making light sculptures of animals like this is also how agott unwinds and tries to get through creative blocks. a 'I learned it from watching you dad (positive)' situation, maybe stemming from this very incident, or just the two of them having some similarities as people?

also so fascinating that he downplays/denigrates what he's contributed here -- 'false flame, fabricated lights' -- while appreciating the joy it awakens in the kids as real and valuable. it's the same thing he does when coco gushes about how much she loved the glowing cobblestones when she was little. (and again as a parallel, agott's process of finding joy and freedom in magic when she starts considering the happiness she can bring someone, rather than the pursuit of perfection to prove herself worthy)
