My beloved roadtrip au… It's a modern, on-earth au that operates on slice of life comedy sitcom rules. My beloved and I use it as a detox for more angsty bloodymary/IL/PHM stories because truly nothing bad happens. The WORST that ever happens is in line with "Ten 10 Moments Sitcoms Got Emotional" compilations and general bittersweetness
Grace still works with Stratt studying astrophage, Simon is still from a cult and still served time in prison (with Yancy), Yancy ropes Colt into being his cross-country get away driver, and Rocky THE inciting incident for the series

Colton "Colt" Seavers-Moreno
Ryland Grace Seavers (Known as just Ryland Grace) is still a Teacher for Grover Cleveland Middle School in San Francisco . While he owns a vehicle, he chooses to ride his bike to school every day. He doesn't have a car—he has a fat camper van. He's deadass just too embarrassed to drive it to school, so he doesn't… it's also a piece of shit. It can drive but it's a miracle it still works, especially considering Grace does no upkeep on the thing.
He lives in his brother Colt's apartment and is 90% sure Colt has forgotten he has it. Colt told him he could always come by, though, and they're family and Grace doesn't want to live in a van or pay for his own apartment. It all works out perfectly, if you think about it…
While Colt and Grace are twins and they are family and do love one another, they are Mysteriously Estranged. I mean this genuinely, there is no real reason for their estrangement, but they don't talk, they don't keep in contact, and they can only be in each others' presence for so long before they start to lose their minds.
One day, there is a meteor strikes in the deserts of California. It's a crazy news story for weeks before it goes completely radio silent. While the curiosity is, in fact, killing Grace, he does drop it in favor of focusing on his current life…
Eva Stratt does still show up to his school and recruit him to the still-global task force assigned to the alien technology found at the crash site… Grace did not drop his curiosity and jumps at the opportunity (though he still does hesitate, because he loves being a teacher and loves his kids. This does not change his decision.)
He's given a government issued car so he can travel between the labs (essentially Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratories, but this is fiction) and not have to haul his piece of garbage, embarrassing, easily recognizable nana-van
Keeping it simple, one day Grace is taken from his role researching and reverse engineering the alien fuel and Stratt gives him clearance to the absolute most top-secret part of the 'mission:' the alien life found at the crash sight.
At first Grace is elated to get to meet the alien and interact with it and research it, but he realizes the methods of communicating with the alien leave much to be desired… and he could do a much better job.
He bonds with the alien who he, of course—and to no one's surprise— names Rocky… Eventually he overhears the kinds of tests they're thinking about running on him and, while none of it would kill Rocky, Grace can't stand to let any of that happen to his new bestest alien buddy
The only natural course of action was to break him out of a high security nuclear research lab, shove him in his grandma van, and flee the country to Maine.
"What's in Maine?" Dude he doesn't know, but that's where he's going
The FEDs give chase, of course, and with Stratt leading the charge… however this is a funny sitcom AU and Grace wouldn't stand a chance in this situation. Stratt takes great amusement in Dr. Grace. It's the reason she wanted to pair him with the alien lifeform… she wanted to see what they would do for her own amusement. Grace is fighting for his life running from the FEDs and Stratt is playing amused cat and mouse.
That's the basic starting point for the AU!!! Of course there's more and I'm really eager to share it now that I've gotten to yap about it, but here's a very brief summary of everyone else.
Simon Yeong left his cult (The Born Again Children of Eden) with help from his mother and was almost immediately thrown in prison following a case of aggravated assault. (The cult wanted him back, he didn't want to go)
He's put in Happy Trails Penitentiary where every day is a musical torture while Yancy and his bitta-forced-bitta-found family try to rope him in to being pals and staying in prison. (They give him the nickname Butcher because Yancy thought a cool prison name would butter him up. This was also after he found out Simon was charged with aggravated assault… which also makes Yancy try and provoke Simon into assaulting him in an aggravated way so that he'll stay longer).
Simon is let out on good behavior… and within hours of him being sent on his way someone blows up the prison to bust him out.
All of Yancy's inmates jump on the opportunity to escape, leaving him alone.
Yancy leaves the prison to find his family and to pick a bone with Simon (since it was a rescue mission for HIM that let his family loose). He runs into Colt Seavers-Moreno who's on his way out of California to see his beloved wife kick of her country-wide movie presentation of her new film! (Or like whatever directors do… Guys, Yancy and Colt are there for the B-plot, sorry).
He makes Colt his driver while he sets out to track everyone down as well as commit the perfect crime that can get him thrown back in a nice jail just like Happy Trails.
Back to Simon, he was left to wander out on the roads of California with nowhere to go. His ass was going to die, but he comes across a broken down camper and a man just in absolute despair about it.
Despite his fear of strangers, he offers to help fix his van.
Right as Grace is about to be on his way, the prison explodes and Grace— for all intents and purposes— kidnaps Simon to the next city (as a favor of course… and he panicked…)
I absolutely love this AU, it's like sunshine and rainbows to me and my beloved @djpachipikachu especially while we work on only PHM/IL/Bloodymary stories that are considerably more … upsetting at times.
I'm truly so joyed to get to talk about it on tumblr. Hopefully with this post as a kind of context/starting point, too, we may post about them more
