Ellen, a 20-year-old young woman with anorexia nervosa, returns home after struggling though an inpatient program and failing to make any progress. With her absentee father unwilling to deal with her, Ellen’s stepmother (Susan) sets her up with a specialist, William Beckham, an unconventional doctor who challenges her to face her condition and embrace life. Ellen joins his program and moves into the house with six other patients. During her stay, Ellen goes on a harrowing and sometimes funny journey of self-discovery.
In my opinion, this movie doesn’t explain the viewers the value of food and healthy eating, also I feel that the director/writer should’ve explained these diseases during the film, like a nutrition student, I think is important. Learning about this topic help us to know how to deal with a family member/friend or anybody that have a type of eating disorder.
Well, talking about learning, what are eating disorders? According to a scientific mexican magazine published by sciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) “Eating disorders are characterized by severe distortions of food intake in people who have altered eating patterns, secondary to psychological derangement. This group of diseases involve several entities which vary greatly and are classified as: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, “eating disorder not otherwise specified” and binge eating disorder. All of them are more common in women and generally begin during adolescence, becoming chronic diseases.”
I really liked at the end of the movie when Ellen dreamed that she was sitting on a tree and from there she saw her dead body on the ground. Then she woke up releived and happy that she wasn’t dead. After all, she truly wanted to live and heal, because life can be unfair and hard sometimes, but is beautiful, full of joy, great moments and rewards.
For me, the movie is fine, is not boring and I’ve always liked how Lily Collins acts. But, talking about the main content, I think this film does not entirely depict what having an eating disorder is truly like. I expected more, they could have deepen in the subject.
It’s important to spread awareness and understand about eating disorders. If you know someone that’s struggling with a disease like anorexia or bulimia, encourage them to take a program, support group where specialists can help them to deal with their condition. Tell them that no matter what they see in the mirror, being fit and healthy is so much more important than physical appearance. Beautiful is not a perfect body, beautiful is being strong, healthy and happy with yourself. Remember that every body is different, forget about prototypes, they don’t exist.
