Illumi x fem!reader (she/her). Uh, high school AU?
warnings: Hisokaās a little creepy
A/N: uh hey... I came out to my parents... I hate them.
Illumi hated high school. No, that was wrong, he enjoyed high school (or more specifically, the learning part of it). In reality, he hated Hisoka.
Hisoka, who had dragged him to this godforsaken party in the Lucilfer mansion, full of liquor, drugs, sex, and the worst of all, people. He knew that probably wasn't the nicest thing to say about his best (and only) friend, but right then and there, that was how he was feeling. Standing in a crowd of people, his friend nowhere to be seen, probably doing some less than legal things.
The music was blaringly loud, and the lights were somehow flashing, despite being normal lights that definitely weren't supposed to flash like that.
Illumi, who despite being on edge the entire time, was deep in thought, wondering if the flashing lights were a stroke hazard or if they were too spread out to be a hazard, when suddenly, a girl around his age bumped right into him, falling onto him.
He could just make out her silhouette as she let out a small squeak, tumbling onto him.
Before he could speak, or even react, the girl fumbled up, smoothing out her shirt and muttering out apologies faster than he could comprehend.
He raised an eyebrow at the girl, who had scurried off somewhere, calling out "Shalnark, get back here you bastard."
A little bit after that, Hisoka had snuck up behind Illumi, attempting, and failing, to scare him. Illumi had brushed Hisoka off, sick of his antics, and just wondering how the hell Hisoka had managed to coerce him into coming here. Didn't they have a seminar once at school about that? Peer pressure, or whatever it was called?
Whatever. He went to tune Hisoka out, a skill he had slowly perfected over the years, but Hisoka had grabbed his wrist, pulling him away to a side room.
Illumi couldn't help but roll his eyes at Hisoka's antics, that was until he saw the circle of people sitting around something he couldn't see. What was that thing?
His eyebrows raised as he looked around, seeing some people he recognized (Chrollo Lucilfer, Machi, and Feitan were also in his grade, and he had gone to middle school with them), seeing some people he had never seen before, and seeing one girl that he recognized from earlier.
You were the girl that had run into him. And you looked extremely uncomfortable, despite Machi nonchalantly talking to you and laughing.
Hisoka followed Illumi's gaze, and couldn't help but crocodile smile when he saw the young man's gaze on the girl. "Oh... you have your eyes on someone?"
Illumi shot his eyes back up to Hisoka, and upon seeing his smirk, grimaced. "Of course not. She ran into me earlier, and was quite rude about it."
"Mmm, I heard her name's (Y/N), apparently she's Shalnark's cousin or something. Well, she's still hot. If you don't want her, I'll call dibs."
Illumi couldn't help but slightly roll his eyes, "What are we doing here anyway? Can I go home yet?"
"Mmmm, no. Now come on, we're playing a game."
"What game are we playing then?"
"7 minutes in heaven, now come on and sit down," Hisoka replied, sitting down next to Chrollo and letting his legs splay out. he pulled Illumi down onto him, who in return, shoved himself off of Hisoka and sat next to him, his legs uncomfortably pulled to his chest.
"So you spin the bottle, and then you'll go into the closet."
"Oh look, we're starting."
And sure enough, Illumi looked over to who was holding the bottle. Or rather, at Shalnark, who was forcing the girl's hand onto the bottle.
"Shal, I don't wanna go first."
"Yeah, well you are. So spin it. But if it lands on me you're spinning it again."
They both watched as she sighed and gave the bottle a small spin before it landed on none other than Hisoka.
Hisoka looked over at the girl, who was looking at him with big eyes.
"Mmm, I think it landed on Illumi."
What? It wasn't facing- oh it was.
Illumi knew Hisoka had nudged the bottle with his leg and had made it face Illumi. Fuck Hisoka.
Hisoka shoved Illumi up as Shalnark did the same for the girl.
"Now don't have too much fun you two. Or do. It doesn't matter to me, although I don't think out host would appreciate too many bodily fluids in the closet," Hisoka said, shoving Illumi towards the closet while looking over at the girl, who was awkwardly standing there, resisting Shalnark's pulling on her left arm.
As soon as Hisoka had gotten Illumi in the closet, he quickly grabbed the girl and shoved her into the closet, slamming the door shut and yelling, "Have fun in there!"
The girl stumbled into Ilumi, who reflectively held his arms up.
"Sorry about that, again," she said, standing up fully.
Illumi slightly grimaced at how small the closet was. Even with his back pressed up against the wood paneling, and the girl's back pressed against the opposite side, they were still touching, chest to chest.
After a minute of extremely awkward silence, the girl spoke again, "It's Illumi, right?"
Illumi realized he probably should've asked her something in return.
"You're Shalnark's cousin?"
"Oh yeah, I just transferred here from U.A Academy."
Even in the darkness, Illumi could see the girl's frown.
"Mmm, I guess I just needed a new change of pace, that's all."
"How are you liking it here?"
"Hey, hey, hey, is this an interrogation or something? Let me ask you a question or two."
"Ummm, oh, I know. What's your favourite colour?"
Illumi thought this was a stupid question. "Because I like how it looks."
"You don't seem like the type to go to parties, any specific reason why you're here?"
Illumi thought for a moment. "my friend dragged me along."
"How... how did you get here?"
"Shalnark dragged me along as well. I guess we both have some annoying friends, don't we?" She laughed awkwardly and started messing with the end of her shirt.
Despite her voice being strained, Illumi thought her laugh was pretty. He wanted to hear it again.
Before he could comprehend what he had just thought, the door swung open, causing light to fill the dark closet and Hisoka's face to be less than a foot away from theirs'.
"Anything fun happening in here?"
"No." Illumi shoved Hisoka out of the way. "Can we leave yet?"
Hisoka frowned. "Aw, and here I thought you had a heart."
"You were sorely mistaken. Now move."
Eventually, Illumi found himself sitting by the pool, which was surprisingly empty. As much as he wanted to go home, Hisoka had stolen his keys and was still playing spin the bottle.
"Hey," he heard a familiar voice say.
She sat down next to him, her legs dangling over the edge, feet not quite hitting the water. "So uh, whatcha doing?"
They sat there in silence for about five minutes, until Illumi felt a weight on his hand. Looking down with raised eyebrows, he saw her hand resting lightly on his own.
She looked over at his eyes, which were still focused on her hand. She could practically see the gears turning in his head as she went to move her hand away. "Sorry, I'll-"
After a few minutes, they both heard a voice shout, "Come on (Y/N), we've gotta go! My parents will kill us if we're late again."
Illumi watched as the girl stood up, and he followed suit. He watched as she messed with her sleeve, her eyes focused on the ground for a moment before she looked back at him.
Illumi raised an eyebrow again as he took note of how she seemed to be internally debating something.
Before he could process what was happening, she leaned forward and slightly upwards and touched her lips to his cheek, placing a small kiss on his cheekbone. He felt his cheek heat up a bit as he forced himself to calm down.
"Bye Illumi, see you at school," she said before running off after Shalnark.
Illumi stared after her for a moment, before hearing a voice from behind him say,
"So I guess you call dibs?"
