I only recently started following you and I’ve been intimidated to reach out. But here I am!

I’ve only just finished my first year of my neuro phd, so I have a lot left 🥲 What kind of research do you do? If it’s super specific and you don’t want to completely specify, what kind of techniques do you use?

Do you have any advice for a femme who moved across the country to be the first in her family to do science?

Congrats on getting through your first year, first off!! That’s probably the biggest accomplishment (besides walking the stage ofc), bc it IS such a big paradigm shift, esp for someone who moved across the country and is a first in her family. You’re doing amazing, and know that no matter how tough it gets, people are out here rooting for you, like me!

My research deals with chronic pain and its effects on the immune cells of the DRG! I actually do a three-pronged approach, between protein analysis via ELISA, transcriptomics work, and good old-fashioned IHC and fluorescence analysis.

As for the advice, I’d say to find good people, people who see you for all you’ve accomplished. People who support you and celebrate you and stick by you when it gets rough or mundane. That does mean risking pain or even heartbreak, but you and I both know this is part of learning life. Building routines or making strides in your work is all good and dandy, and you MUST give yourself every advantage you can by taking proper care of yourself, but it’s the people by your side that will make or break the journey.
