The change in Valerieâs expression made Nate realise he would not leave this conversation easily forgiven. How many times had he given the same excuse? Nate lost count. In fact, at times he never realised he would use the same excuse to ditch plans, it was far too predictable. âLook, Valerie. I ainât gonna argue with you about this either.â Nate raised his hands as a form of surrender to the conversation. âBelieve me, I donât want to be going just as much as you but what? Would you rather I let a younger get hurt?â His head tilted as he watched Valerie walk away from him.
His eyes rolled. He fucking hated that. If there was one thing he hated, it was when she walked away, still arguing with him, it was just damn rude. Nate never wanted to leave a conversation unfinished on bad terms. So he done, what he always did, follow. âHey. It ainât always like that.â He lied, trying to save face. He approached the bathroom where the door was slammed in his face. âYouâre being quick to assume when I couldâve been gone by now and be done with. I would be back in no time.â He raised his hands out in frustration, yelling through the closed door. âBut no, weâre here arguing about it instead!âÂ
She just wanted to stand and scream on the spot out of frustration, she hated hearing the same excuses. Even worse when he tried to pretend it wasnât one, or that he hadnât used it before. âNo, no, no, do not do that.â She said through gritted teeth, trying her best not to turn into full out shouting. âDonât Act like i want some kid to get hurt because I want you to show up when you say you are going to. How come you show up for everyone else but me.â She knew Nate cared about here, they wouldnât go round and round like this if he didnât. Yet it always felt he prioritized her last.
âIt is always like that Nate. This isnât the first and Iâm sure it wonât be the last.â She shouted threw the door. She knew Nate was steaming on the other side of the door but she figured it didnât hurt to make him stew for a moment. They both new that he wouldnât have been back by now, the problem was that he didnât want to admit it. She quickly washed her body off and stepped out of the shower wrapping a towel around herself. She took a breath and then pulled open the door,âIâm surprised youâre still in here. Donât you have more important places to be then here with your girlfriend.â She brushed past him as she looked around the room for some clean clothes to throw on, trying not to stop to look at him.

It was always nice to see a familiar face which is why he loved working as a bartender, it was full of them. Being a small town, it didnât long before Owen was able to recognize most of the regulars at the bar. However, Valerie was different because she was a friend. With other clients, Owen felt it was necessary to not let down his guard and the bar counter between him and the customers usually help as a reminder. He was there to pour them drinks and listen to them and while he was fond of some of them he needed to remember it was still a job. âBabysitter? I didnât know you were a pediatrician,â he said with a chuckle, aware that she wasnât but just messing with her. âWell, they are residents, they literally have no clue what they are doing. Canât you just send them to suture a banana?â He didnât if that was a thing, it was just something heâd seen in Greyâs Anatomy once.
âIs that bad?â He questioned with a quirked brow, moving to rest both of his arms onto the bar. âYou know I usually just call a cab for those who canât leave the bar on their own, but since you use to be one of us Iâll make an extra effort and carry you home.â A gentle smile forming on her lips before slapping both hands on the counter. âAlright! A strong drink it is. Any requests or are you leaving that choice to me?â He asked with a daring tone and a cocky smile. âIt looks like the hospital life is taking its toll on you. Donât you wish you would have stayed here with us?â His tone is playful but he doesnât really mean it. Valerie had moved on to better things and he was proud of her.
Valerie loved coming to the bar, it had become a comfort for her after a long shift. It was a place she could come and cut loose and she didn't have to be a doctor for a little. As much as she loved her job, it still took a toll. There was long hours, hard work, and of course there was hardships like the lives you couldn't save. Here job required decisions that meant life or death but when she came here it was like she was just a co worker at the bar again. "Hey at least in Peds you get to hold cute babies. My interns aren't cute babies." She shrugged, though she knew she would hate if all she did was deliver babies and take care of kids all day.Valerie broke out with a laugh, "where did you hear that from? I mean we actually do use bananas."
âI think itâll be the best part of my night.â She smirked. Mimicking him she placed her arms on the bar leaning in, âIâll be the envy of all the girls in the bar cause Iâm the lucky one who you are carrying out out of here. All they get is a cab.â She smirked at him and let out a little laugh. It was true though, whenever they worked together girls were always giggling and flipping their hair as they waited for him to make their drinks. "I don't know why I'm trusting you but.. let's make it bartenders choice." She said even with the mischievous look on his face. This wouldn't be the first time he got her into a bit of trouble while drink. He could make a mean drink. "You know some days I do seriously wish I was back here. How about you go to Med school and come work with me. It would be a lot more fun." She joked, she would love to work with Owen again. That being said she loved being a doctor, despite the long hours and crappy interns.Â

Jacob like early mornings, mostly because that meant that he didnât have to pull an all-nighter and he could sleep at his own bed. Also, there was more to do throughout the day. He had arrived at the hospital at around 7:00 am and after a few cups of coffee, he went to round all his patients. Nothing out of the usual, he changed some treatments, and then had a short meeting with the nurses and other attendings. So far, the day was very calm but Jacob knew it was only a matter of time before an acute situation arose. He went to his office to do some tedious paperwork and drink his third cup of coffee of the day.
He was writing some new prescriptions when the door opened and a familiar face popped in. Leaning back in his chair, he looked at her and shook his head but he couldnât help the smile already forming on his lips. âAm I hearing doubt in your tone, Val?â he said, teasingly. âDidnât I warn you that surgical residents were bitchy? I believe I said it a bunch of times but did you listen to me? Nope, you ignored my advice.â Jacob knew that trying to convince Valerie to do his residency in Psych was a waste of time. Her mind and heart were truly set on cardio, much to his chagrin. âPlease come in, and make yourself at home.â Not like he needed to extend the invitation, she already did it without it. âAlright, so what did the mean boys and girls from surgical do to you this time? Iâm all ears! Literally, thatâs my job.â
Val smiled but she couldnât help but playfully rolling her eyes as he mentioned the doubt in her voice and reminding her that he had in fact warned her about surgical residents. He had told her many times, and she knew he was right. Surgeons were cut throat, and she had to admit the competition only made her strive to be better. Which she did like, but there were times were it wore her thin. âYes, yes. I know... You were right, is that what you wanted to hear?â She laughed, before she let her self into his office. She did wait for his invitation in case he was in the middle of something more important, but she usually had the tendency to make herself comfortable in his office. She couldnât imagine acting like this with one of her attendingâs, but she could with Jacob since she was staying in the surgical wing of the hospital. âAm i suppose to lie down and tell you my life story?â She teased.
Val walked in picking up his cup of coffee taking a sip, âIâve been up all night.â She said in an excuse for stealing his coffee. Though she joked about it before she did cross the room and lay down on his couch. âWell letâs start with did you see my shoes?â She asked incredulously, lifting her feet up in the air to show her overly sized crocs. âI had the worst night dealing with a couple of drunk idiots.. Which is why Iâm wearing these horrid things.â She told him. Val had to admit laying here she could see how people could end up spilling their guts. âAnd neither of the other residents would help. They flat out refused cause they wanted better cases. Something that would lead to a surgery.â She huffed grabbing a pillow and hugging it to her chest. It frustrated her but deep down she knew the reason she was so angry about being stuck with a couple of drunks was because it meant she wasnât going to get anything surgical.

Nate closed his eyes and bit his bottom lip because he knew what was going to come next. It wasnât the first time heâd forgotten an important date or a key piece of information. He had enough to keep track of. Re-opening his eyes, he looked over at Valeria with guilt. He could already see by the way she looked at him that whatever next come out of his mouth was clear utter bullshit and she was not accepting a word from his mouth. âLook..â He sighed, trying to come off as innocent and regretful as possible. Nate approached Valerie, placing his hands onto her shoulders. âBabe..â Nateâs voice softened. âItâs not me. I swear. I just gotta rush out to sort something and in no time, I will be back.â At least, he hoped.
It was never as easy as spoken. Nate didnât enjoy giving broken promises but majority of the time, the situation would be out of his hands, forcing him to follow whatever kept him alive and safe. âMaybe if you go alone and Iâll catch up with you.. Yâknow, so itâs not a complete shitshow of a night?â He negotiated. In truth, Nate didnât want to give Valerie anymore reason to be on his case. In fact, he was hoping she would go out and enjoy herself with or without him so they could forget this conversation even happened.Â
Valerie held her breath as she waited to hear his excuse before letting out a deep sigh. She hated when Nate did this, she liked to turn a blind eye to the world he was involved in but he made it hard in times like this. She wanted to ask him to let it all go, leave that whole world behind. To choose her but she was too scared of what the answer would be to ever truly ask. "Nate you have got to be fucking kidding me.." She shook her head in disbelief, "If it's not you then why do you have to go? Can't whatever it is just wait another night?" She asked but she knew the answer already.
She moved backward causing his hand to fall off her shoulder. "I can't do this with you right now. I'm already late, and I have to come up with yet another excuse to my friends as to why my boyfriend isn't showing up. Again." She turned and started to walk to bathroom, "Because we both know that you aren't going to catch up with us later. You're going to be gone all night and apologize in the morning for not being able to get away. So we might as well just talk then." She shouted behind her, before she closed the bathroom door. She started the shower and quickly stripped down. Stepping into the stream of hot water, letting it run over over face as she tried to clear her head.

( @valeriedavisâ )
Bartending was supposed to be a temporary job, something that helped him pay the bills while he explored his options and found his true calling. Heâd changed many things in his life in the past years and his life was far from being steady but at least he had a job that gave some sort of balance to it. Those who knew the old Owen thought he was trying to reinvent himself when he first started bartending. His mother definitely still considered it a âstopoverâ career, but the longer he did it, the more he enjoyed it. Often people would come to the bar and after finding out what he used to do before would say âI can tell you could be doing so much more.â Few sentences annoyed him more than that one. Just the thought of going back to his old job made him feel the strains of the cubicleâs confines. That life was behind him and he was not planning to go back.
It was a slow night, just some of the regulars were around and a small group at the back. With nothing better to do, he started flipping through the cash, and fingering the coins on the counter. For a slow shift, it was a pretty decent amount. He took half of the tips and gave them to the other bartender before telling him that he could go as he didnât think that this night would get any more active. Owen pocked his half and then started cleaning the counter, all while, poor Mr. Stewart kept complaining about his wife. âMaybe you should stop inviting random strangers to check out your garden, buddy,â he said as a familiar face walked through the door. âWell, well, if it isnât but Dr. Davis,â he said, a slight hint of sarcasm in his tone but only to tease her. âTo what do I owe the pleasure?â he questioned teasingly with a chuckle, eyebrows arching upwards in amusement.
Valerie felt like her shift would never end. They had a new round of interns and they were painfully dumb. She was sure that when she was an intern she was smart and looked a little less like a deer in head lights. Even the simplest of orders seemed to go right over their heads. It had been a busy night in the pit, she hadn't had a chance to sit for her entire shift, every time she had gone to take a break someone would page her or one of her interns would have a stupid question and she's have to go walk them through things. All she wanted was a really big drink at this moment. The second her shift was over she was out the door, leaving intern to finish the paper work for the day. At least there was one upside to having interns.
Valerie left the hospital and headed straight to the bar she used to work at. She hadn't thought to text Owen so all she could do was hope he was going to be there. As soon as Valerie got there she let out a sigh seeing the familiar face behind the bar. She just laughed as plopped herself down in the bar stool. She hadn't dared sit down till this moment for fear she wouldn't be able to get back up. "Ha ha very funny. I don't feel like a doctor, I'm a glorified babysitter." She shook her head. "I got the worst interns. They just trail behind me like little ducklings who have no clue where they are going or what the hell they are suppose to be doing... It was a very long day, and I need a very strong drink to forget it" She laughed. "Also there is a very good chance I might not be able to get out of this stool and you will have to carry me home." She half joked.
Valerie had been working in the pit all night. She had spent half the night trying to wrangle a couple of drunk guys who needed stitches. Her reward was having one of them throw up on her shoes. All the bitch work seemed to be getting thrown her way. The other resident Bryan had literally laughed in her face when she asked for assistance before going to find himself a more alluring case to work on and Anna had made up a very obviously fake excuse with her signature snooty smile before also leaving her. Once she finally managed to get both patients to sit still long enough to sew them both up and discharged, she headed straight to the showers.
Walking down the hall in a pair of crocs she had taken from one of the interns who's feet must at least be two sizes bigger than hers. She squeaked her way down the hall to Jacobs office. After the night she had the last place she wanted to be was the residents lounge. When she arrived at his office door knocking as she opened it and popped her head in, "I need sanctuary!" She laughed "Are the Physic residents as bitchy as the Surgical residents? Cause if not I think I might switch after all." She tossed her hands up dramatically, they both knew she wasn't going to actually switch. She just liked to tease that she would. She done a rotation in Physic, all surgical residents had too. If it was as simple getting to work under Jacob she might have jumped ship. But her sights were firmly set on Cardio, even if her attendingâs werenât nearly as easy to work for as Jacob had been.

nate-hayesâ:
It was supposed to be a peaceful day for Nate but his line was ringing continuously. Somewhere through the night, shit hit the fan and now a war was brewing between, who the fuck even knows? All Nate caught was one of his boys fucking over another gang in town. Over the edge of pissed off, Nate barked into his phone. âListen âere. This shit?â He took a deep breath. âAinât my fucking problem. If TJ wants to fuck about when heâs been told what needs doing, heâs out and on his own.â He listened to the voice on the other end of the line, pleading for his help. The type of people involved were the kind Nate had connections to. A phone call or two, he could save someoneâs life. A sigh followed after the male on the other end finished talking. âAlright, listen. Tell TJ to stay put. Iâll call when Iâve sorted it. If I even fucking can.â With that Nate ended the call and looked back to make sure he wasnât heard.Â
There were a lot of shit Nate could be open about with Valerie, after all, she knew of his nature. It didnât mean she agreed and therefore, if Nate could avoid a confrontation about becoming a do-gooder, he would. Nate twisted the phone in between his fingers, trying to figure out how he would get out of whatever plans were made with his girl, to sort this mess he was dragged into.Â
@valeriedavisâ
Valerie let herself into Nates place, she had been crashing with him most nights since her moms new boyfriend and her did not get along. It was hard enough going through school and studying let alone when she was constantly bickering with her moms latest Mr. Wonderful. Luckily for her, Nate didn't seem to mind her staying with him. "Hey babe," She called out. She saw him as she walked in out of the corner of her eye but she had too many things in her hands. She quickly tossed her bags with her countless books down, "So I hope you didn't forget we are suppose to be meet some of my friends from class for drinks tonight." Val said, kicking off her shoes. "I'm a little later then I thought so I'm just going to jump in the shower and then we can go, okay?" She was just about to pull off her her T-shirt her hands still pulling the cloth half way up her torso when she finally looked at him. She hadn't caught the look in his face until this moment and all she could think was shit.
Valerie knew him well enough to know that something was up. She had seen the look before, someone else might not have caught but she had seen it before. "What?.." She sighed, "what happened? Please tell me youâre not bailing." She asked though she had a bad feeling she already knew the answer to her question.
