SOMEWHERE IN NYC, 2015
Afterburner, 2016
Outside everything shimmered like plated chromium. The only reality was the smell of sweat. Back in my room, after little attention to my face, I had slept close to seventeen hours. My face burned as if someone had worked it with a file. I opened the window and held moistened towels to my face. This period of seclusion when I had no need to fear the eyes of others was like a seat reserved for me alone. My real face, my mask, my scar webs, all such evanescent adornments, were diaphanous as if pierced with light. Substance and essence were cleansed of all affectation. The soul became something I could taste directly with my tongue; a peeled peach. I decided to let my mask dream as it would for a while. The dreams would be somewhat crude, like the mask. Released from any mental restraint, it can be utterly free and infinitely cruel. I began to circle the room with the air of being on business.
