OAK.
his head shakes almost violently ( it has the room spinning ), and he just keeps leaking. tears aren’t quite cascading down his cheeks yet, but his voice shifts to a wet, broken noise. ‘i can’t.’ he wants nothing more than to fall back to the floor, curl in upon himself and breathe until the world fades away. oak had barely registered boost slotting himself against his side, except for when ribcages clack against each other and he wheezes as pain washes over him again. he doesn’t quite believe this is a reality - jyn has KINDNESS in her voice and GENTLENESS in her touch and he doubts this is really his world. rather, it’s one he’s more than likely invented - a way of flitting away from anguish to try and save himself. ‘i can’t, jyn, i don’t wanna keep goin’.’
the ache in his voice pulls on something in her, something deep and dark and hidden away from the light, buried and locked away behind that hatch. it’s hard to breathe through the sudden desperation and her grip on him tightens like she can keep him on his feet through sheer force of will alone. “you haven’t got a choice—” her voice cracks and for a split second she feels like herself at eight again, lost in the dark and forgotten, but boost moves them forward a step and she has to shake herself out of it. “have you got any idea what pogie would do to me if i left you here?”
SABINE.
❝ my work concerns you? ❞ her voice lifts, and she struggles to keep it in check. there are other people who could hear, after all, and they need to mind their business. ❝ jyn. i can pay for my own mistakes. i don’t need you to come in and be this saviour, or whatever the hell you’re thinking’s gonna happen. i’m a tough girl, and i know what i’m doing. i’ve done a lot more on a lot less. ❞ it isn’t the entire truth, but her life’s a bundle of half-truths and scattered promises anyway. she brings her hand up, rubs it against her eyes. ❝ again: i’m fine. i’ll sleep tonight, if that’ll get you of my damn case. ❞
saviour. she knows exactly why the word catches in her mind like a ragged nail and she has to bite through the urge to argue back against it. she should just walk away, all things considered; she shouldn’t be here trying to tell anyone else how to better live their lives. she shouldn’t care, and that’s what it is, isn’t it? she cares despite the fact that there’s no room for it here, in the midst of war, only pain. only loss. her jaw clenches hard against the realization. “if that’s what you think is best.” she dips her chin, mouth thin. “i’ll defer to your better judgement.”
STRANGER.
‘i’m just –’ just what, percival? what are you attempting to do here? already, anxiety is closing down his vocal chords, threatening to choke him out and poison him before he can even get out an explanation. ‘the empire.’ a default statement, he assumes. hands splay across the grimy earth, feeling his skin already stain with the festering soot of this world. ‘i’ve been running for the empire for months now.’
it takes seconds to assess the situation and make a decision, but it still takes a couple heartbeats more for her to ease off him. it doesn’t mean she trusts him and she definitely doesn’t believe him—she keeps the blaster trained on him as she steps back out of the way. “this is a stupid place to be if you’re running from them,” she points out, peering back towards the brightly lit plaza just in case someone’s trailed them back out here, “you’re going to get yourself killed.”
STRANGER.
‘don’t need your fuckin’ advice.’ it’s not even his car that he’s parking - doesn’t care if it gets a ticket or not ( had asked last night’s partner if he could steal the car for a quick run to the grocery store - hadn’t bothered pointing out that he was actually stealing it for a bit ). keys get tucked in the glove compartment, only one door left locked before he’s heading towards the grocery store. this weirdo lurking out front can fuck right off. ‘maybe don’t go talking to strangers, tryin’ to tell ‘em what to do.’
normally she wouldn’t care. she doesn’t tie herself to strangers, doesn’t throw her hand in places it’s not wanted. she’s a shadow—a ghost, at best—and getting noticed only ever promises to lead into easily avoided trouble. yet she finds herself pushing away from the window, boots scuffing the sidewalk as she trails him by steps, head tipped curiously. why, she doesn’t know and honestly, she should leave well enough alone. her mouth has other plans: “you having a bad day, then?”
TARKIN.
it’s been months that she’s waited to be requested for this meeting. krennic—as admirable as his tenacity can be—has done his absolute best to delay her progress beyond his reach and she’s spent too long now pretending like she hasn’t noticed. when it became clear that the usual routes of upward progress would remain closed to her she did the only wise thing she could think of: she went above him to someone who was able to put her name forward. he’d hate it, surely, but she’s not stupid. she’s excelled through all the requisite training and she’s not about to be held back by someone else’s ego. not with avenues so easily open to taking with a simple side-step. if anything he should be proud.
she is every bit intent and poised when she’s called in, chin high and eyes sharp. the whole song and dance of the imperial military is little more than game once it’s broken down into its basic parts and if there’s one thing she’s good at it’s winning something she desperately wants to win. hungry, someone had said once, and she is exactly that as she stands just inside the door of his office, waiting for his attention to lift from his work long enough to address her. // @freedforce
PAPA.
( @valltborne )
HE HAS LEARNT TO recognize the rhythms of the day. From the first tendrils of dawn that slip through a window too high up & too small for him to reach or even think about squirming through & into his room ( bare walls, small desk, thin mattress, no company ) to the quiet industry of midnight when a scant force of rebel soldiers run back & forth, keeping watch while the rest of the force catches a few hours of rest, he knows the time of day by the noises & the slant of light through the window.
He knows that it is now nearly midday.
It is lonely here, much lonelier than he had thought it would be. He had thought that an Imperial facility, where he could trust no one & where he could not even reveal his true self to the silence of his own quarters, was the loneliest place in the galaxy. He was wrong. This is lonelier.
Perhaps because he knows there are people all around, people he could talk to, people he could meet & people he could help, but they refuse to acknowledge him.
He sits most days & stares at the wall, writing endless notes on numerous discontinued ideas from his youth. He has no one to transcribe them, so he doubts that they are readable or even remotely useful. But, it is something to do to pass the time, is it not?
His eyes drift down to the graphite clutched tightly in his right hand, sitting poised upon the blank paper. He had sat down half an hour ago, but he had not yet written anything down. He had been lost in memory, lost in thought. This confinement is doing no favors for his weary mind.
At the sound of someone at the door, he turns just enough to watch them enter. He expects Bodhi, who tries to visit each day, though can never keep to a strict schedule. His surprise, however, is evident, at the sight of his daughter.
‘Jyn!’ he exclaims ( thought the exclamation is hardly profuse; it is quiet ), ‘I did not expect you today.’
her skin is not her own. the doorway feels like an escape behind her, a convenient way out of the mess she’s let herself into here; she’s not sure who it is that steps forward far enough for it to slide shut behind her because she knows she’s not brave enough to have done it herself.
she’s made a point of keeping her distance. it is one thing for a desperate reunion on a stormy platform with x-wings screaming in the wind above them: the situation all but calls for grasping hands and unafraid hugs; it is something else entirely to face him again in the cold light of reality.
he’s a stranger made up in parts she no longer recognizes. the pieces she sees of him now don’t quite match up to the image in her mind, to the shadows of memories of before that have been burned through and sullied by the memories she’d replaced that version of him with. that same old anger sits ever-present, ready on the tip of her tongue, ready to lash out like the eight-year-old who’d been left behind by a coward. her fingers curl into a fist at her side but she forces herself still.
honestly, she’d never imagined that this might be them someday. not in all the time she’d spent with saw, not when she’d been on her own, not when she’d seen his message and his truth cut through the anger to the very core of her. this room feels as sterile and lifeless as the rest of them do and something about the fact that his quarters aren’t that dissimilar from her own is almost calming. they’re on a level playing field.
she wants to say something but she’s never been good with words and now, when she needs them, they’ve deserted her entirely. her mouth opens, then closes. a nicety: something soft and formless feels appropriate, but she’s never been one to ease herself into a conversation. her voice, at least, is even when she speaks.
“you didn’t leave me, then, did you?” she’d seen his message, she knows what he’d said; she wants the words again. she wants the admission without the flicker and hum of static between them. “you didn’t choose to stay away?”
I am either a storm or a drought. In-betweens have never been my thing.

HERA.
“what are you doing out here?” it’s dark; the hangar is unusually quiet for this time of night and while she’s not sure that the haphazard still some endeavouring soul set up out in the trees has anything to do with it she wouldn’t bet against it, either. she can only imagine what it might have been like here before she’d arrived, but she’s certain this sort of cautious optimism had been relegated to back corners and closely-guarded hearts. it’s refreshing, a balm to a weary heart.
she knows hera by reputation more than by face; the times they’ve met have been few and quick, rushed between one job and the next. still, she’s the last one to really question someone’s choice for solitude over being surrounded by strangers. // @spectredeux

STRANGER.
NORMALLY she’s not one to fight. normally she’s the girl who sits against the wall and watches: head down, eyes up. but it’s not a normal night and she’s not sure why she thought it might be. there’s something in the air, something thick and restless that’s settled into the vibe of the bar; she can taste it on her tongue, feel it when she breathes. the room feels like it’s pulsing, breathing in time to an unseen heartbeat, and she senses it before the first punch even lands. it’s not even aimed at her, she’s not even involved, but the thin strand of tension snaps and there’s a chain reaction all the way down the line and when someone swings at her she’s not afraid to respond in kind.
it’s not a long fight. it’s not a difficult fight. ‘put them down and get out’ tends to work best for her and she’s up and in the corner by the bar before someone in control of the place bothers to wade in and break up the instigators. she can taste the blood on her lip but the adrenaline burns too hot to feel what else she’s earned from it; that’ll come later, in the morning light. // @sororsam
BODHI.
"can’t sleep?” it’s a non-question. the words hang in the dark between them and she wishes she hadn’t said anything at all. the quarters they’ve given her are spartan at best, rudimentary in both bed and amenities, and still even the rebellion’s barrel-scrapings are better than some of the places she’s called home before. the bunk is strange here, too wide and too long after months on wobani—the floor feels safer, more secure. it’s why she’s watching bodhi with her back up against the bunk’s edge, arms folded over her knees: bad bed, can’t sleep.
her chin lifts in invitation, her voice doesn’t feel like her own. “come sit.” // @rookierebel
