The Internet Can Be An Unbearable Place
Much like most of the world, I got sucked into the beautiful, life-altering piece of art that is Heated Rivalry. It showed up in my life at the right time, and it was a lovely distraction from the world falling apart and people being killed for protecting people...oh, and war...s...wars...wars and genocides.
It was something beautiful, but then the wrong people on the internet took it and ran down the most infuriating path. I mourn the privacy and anonymity of the cast while being happy for their success. I'm finding it harder and harder to love this art when so many of the actions of "fans" have just been punishing the cast for simply being part of bringing it to life.
The internet is a scary, unbearable, and unkind place, and I hate that I keep being reminded that people can be too. This may be parasocial of me, too, but it'll be the first and last time I bring it to the internet. I think it's important for us to remember that not every thought has to be shared on the internet, that 99.9% of the time, we are owed absolutely nothing from artists besides their craft, and that getting greedy and tearing through someone's life when they've been generous enough (especially when they didn't have to) is awful and in my opinion, betraying the artist you say you admire.
Again, this is my first and last public show of parasocial, and I'm doing the work to deconstruct the parasocialness that I show to my friends, knowing I'd absolutely hate having what's being done to them be done to me. So, I don't want to add to it if I can help it, golden rule and all that jazz. Of course, none of this applies to the fans who have been appropriate and respectful. If you read this and get mad...well, hit dogs usually holler.
Please let us be normal about this.
And if you can't because the show and books are just that amazing, please keep the crazy attached to the fictional? Heaven knows I'm not normal about Shane, Ilya, or any of the Game Changers characters.
But the only way we keep getting good art and more of the fictional characters we love is by not alienating the people working so damn hard to bring them to life. This production was incredible because everyone involved clearly poured their love, heart, and soul into it.
If we want good things from them, we can't make them hate it!
