Liam could still remember the first time his father told him he was proud of him. It was a memory seared into his mind, though not for the reasons one might expect. He had been only eleven years old at the time, a carefree child, unaware of how quickly life could change with just a few words. The day had started innocently enough. He’d spent hours outside with his childhood best friend, running around, climbing trees, and laughing like they had no worries in the world. As the sun began to set, they laid side by side in the grass, exhausted but happy. That was when she turned to him, her face suddenly serious.
"I have something to tell you," she’d whispered, her voice tentative, unsure. "I’m a vampire."
Liam hadn’t known what to say at first. He’d heard stories about them, mainly from his father, but in his young mind, it was something distant, something straight out of a fairytale. But as she began to explain what she could do, he felt more amazed than anything else. The fear and hatred his father had spoken of didn’t register for him.
They giggled together, imagining what life would be like if he was a vampire too, the concept feeling more like a game to him than anything real.
They left the park that evening, still whispering and laughing, the weight of her revelation not fully sinking in for Liam. His best friend had shared her deepest secret, and he felt no fear, no disgust, just wonder. But the reality of the world around them was about to shatter that innocence.
That night, they had dinner at his house. His mother had cooked a big meal, and his father sat at the head of the table, as always, presiding over the family with his stern, authoritative presence. Liam, his two younger sisters, and his best friend sat at the table, chatting. Without thinking, without understanding the gravity of what he was about to do, Liam spoke.
"She’s a vampire," he said, proudly, as if sharing a fun fact about his friend.
The reaction was immediate. His father’s face darkened, the smile vanishing in an instant. Liam had seen his father angry before, but this was different. This was a kind of anger that went beyond mere frustration, it was disgust. His father’s voice, sharp and commanding, filled the room.
"Get out of my house," he spat, looking directly at the ten-year-old girl sitting at their table.
Liam’s stomach twisted, the shock of the moment hitting him like a physical blow. He had never felt so sick inside. His father had yelled at him many times before, but this was the first time Liam truly felt the weight of his words. The guilt that surged through him was overwhelming. His friend, his closest companion, left the house in tears, and Liam just sat there, stunned and silent.
And then, the moment that would haunt him forever.
His father turned to him and smiled, a proud, approving smile. "Good job, Liam. I’m proud of you. Always speak up when it comes to vampires. They don’t belong with us."
Liam’s heart twisted in confusion. He had longed for his father’s approval, had imagined what it would feel like to make him proud. But now that it had happened, it didn’t feel right. It felt wrong, dirty, even. He didn’t understand it then, but the seed of guilt had already been planted, and it would grow in the years to come.
Before he knew it, his father was handing him all kind of weapons, explaining to him how to use them. Wanting his son to make his first kill. If his best friend’s family didn’t move before they got there, he certainly would’ve…
As Liam grew older, the realities of his father’s beliefs became clearer. His father hunted vampires and wanted him to become exactly like him. His father, always the authoritarian, made sure to shape him into the man he wanted Liam to be. Any shred of the innocent, wide-eyed child who once marveled at the world was methodically stripped away. His father crushed his spirit, molding him into someone cold and detached. Liam learned not to speak unless it was necessary, only breaking his silence when it came to protecting his younger sisters from their father’s harsh words.
The only way he found to escape was enrolling in the army when he turned 18. thinking he would finally be free and independant, but instead he had to face the harsh realities of war.
His life took a turn for the better when he met Maia Kelly, he realized life could actually be enjoyed and that he could be exactly who he wanted to be. Maia was like no other girl he met before, he fell in love with her almost instantly and left the army to be with her. He wanted to get married, to have kids, she entertained the idea for a while, but eventually she had to tell him she was a vampire. He felt conflicted, betrayed, she wanted to turn him and he wanted to be with her forever, but he was scared of what he would become, fearing he would lose his humanity, be like the monsters his father always described.
Eventually, he got hurt, Maia got scared.
She made the choice for him and turned him.
He struggled to adapt, he did try for her, but eventually he had to leave her. He reenlisted and eventually had to fake his death due to suspicions about the fact that he wasn't aging. He left, carrying trauma, anger and deception.
Years of self-discovery ensued, he tried to find love again and finally did only many years later. He was 61 years old, he thought things would finally change. Daniela, a witch, already had a daughter. The two adults got married and Liam even adopted Dahlia only a few months later.
Then, tragedy struck. In November of 2022, Liam and his wife were driving home from dinner with friends when they got into a car accident. His wife didn’t survive, and Liam was left to pick up the pieces. He had no time to grieve. He had to be strong for Dahlia, who was now only 3 years old, growing up with only one parent.
Liam moved them to a supernatural town and as the months passed, Liam threw himself into his work, trying to be the best father he could. He’s completely giving up on living a good and ordinary life.
