Maizie hadn’t even heard her until after she had spoke for a moment. She was too focused on what she was doing to even realize someone had been standing there. “No, not quite,” she admitted softly. “More like just practicing… Just in case.” There was no telling what skills she would need to know once they were all in the arena. Knowing how to make bandages and properly keep a wound clean would be a skill that would be of value so she was going to try to learn it.
Vanea made a noise of interest. Conversation with the District 9 tribute wasn’t high on her list of things to do; there was a combination of timidity, a lack of any discernible skill, and a lack of strength there. No good for an alliance. But an interest in healing wasn’t a dim idea. Though the tribute hadn’t come across as particularly clever, Vanea took note of her for the first time. “You aren’t likely to find bandages like those in the arena. No matter where it’s set.” She looks away from the tribute, out at the stations. It was a bit of a wonder that practical first aid wasn’t a station, but then before arriving Vanea supposed in every district it would have been as necessary to learn first aid as it was in 11. “I had to dress wounds with strips ripped from sheets, sometimes, at home. But open wounds... If there isn’t clean fabric, cleaning it and applying salves can be the only hope, resting. Especially where infection is a risk.” She thought of her brother, and then sent his image away. He’d been haunting her again last night, but she couldn’t dwell on that nightmare any longer.
