Welcome!
This is my Digital Portfolio based on my experience at Sydney Metro NSW (Transport for NSW) over the past 12 weeks. It captures the achievements, outputs and outcomes that I achieved throughout my internship. I’d like to thank Louise Howard for taking me under her wing and showing me the ropes of the Sydney Metro NSW Project.
Internship Update...
In the final few days of my internship I have learnt so much. I met with Donna, a woman who is initiating the beginning stages of the metro line that will run under the Sydney Harbour. She spoke to me about all the processes she has to go through in order to get the green light on the project. She spoke about how they must inform the community of the changes in a positive manner on how it will affect their every day living. However she stated that in life you can’t please everyone, there’s always going to be someone who is unhappy with what you’re doing.
Along with the written document are these sketches in my notebook that I was able to draw up so that I could bring my ideas to life.
Above are the very first ideas I had when told what was expected of me. I was given bits of information and facts from Kate the professional occupational hygienist and was told to be creative and do what I could with what I was given. After typing these up and spending a little while sketching in my notepad, I hit a block and my mind went blank.
Creative Block: A cry for help
When I was first given the task to create and design some infographics for Sydney Metro I immediately became overwhelmed as it was my first real task in a professional environment and my anxiety almost got the better of me. I was shy and quiet in the office and felt intimidated by the people surrounding me. I was afraid to ask questions or ask for help, or even to ask how to connect to the wifi so I just sat there with my notebook writing down the immediate ideas that came to mind. It took a while for a creative flow to come, but it eventually did. However after an hour of thinking of the same thing and reading the same facts and information I had been given, my mind went completely blank and I immediately began thinking I was in way over my head with what I was required to do. What settled me down was when Louise informed me that she wanted to see a draft in two weeks, which meant I had plenty of time to go away and come back to the task with a fresh mind and hopefully some fresh ideas.
Above are some of the outcomes of my Internship experience.
Up Close and Personal
Whilst be driven along the viaduct we stopped in 3 of the sites in the Rouse Hill area so I was able to get some shots of the work being done on the bridge and the viaduct itself. Joe (site manager) informed me that the centre pillars in the last image (currently holding up the bridge) have to now be removed due to the fact that the bridge will be supported by the numerous cables that can be seen in the picture.

I was lucky enough to get driven around to the different work sites of the Sydney Metro and was able to capture the lengthy viaduct that runs through Rousehill all the way through to Cherrybrook.
This is an example of the type of Newsletters I worked on throughout my Internship. I assisted in copywriting and editing the Newsletter along with some employees who gave me some good tips on how to improve any of the work that was given to me.
This is another infographic I produced whilst working with Kate. This one was designed for use in toolbox talks and as an A2 Poster to be placed around worksites and offices, in an attempt to educate people on the seriousness of illness/disease compared to other types of deaths in the constructions industry. I’m very grateful that I was able to work on a project like this as it gave me the opportunity to learn about the tunnelling industry as well as the Advertising industry and how it’s used in a Government role.
Internship Update...
Over the past few weeks, I have been visting the George Street building for Sydney Metro and have been working on some deliverables for the Professional Occupational Hygienist. These deliverables include infographics that will be used at the front of every awareness package created on health risks for the Sydney Metro program, as well as a Powerpoint presentation that will be used for toolbox talks.
When applying for this Internship I knew the work wouldn’t exactly replicate what I have studied in class. In units such as Advertising: Creative, we focused on commercial advertising and the work I am currently undertaking involves more non-commercial advertising, which is something I prefer. This type of work provides opportunities to focus on important matters like health and safety in the work place.
Pictured above is the final draft idea for the first infographic I created, I made sure it was suitable with my supervisor at the time (Kate) and then proceeded with the final production.
The best interests of children are so safeguarded and supervised that they are taught to swim without going too close to water.

This quote inspired me to take risks throughout my internship and to stop being so safe with every step I take, risks need to be taken and can often be rewarded, which is a valuable lesson I will be taking away from this internship.
I was lucky enough to be able to photograph the Sydney Metro train Prototype and I was informed some of the images would be used in their brochures and websites to promote the project and inform the community and its surrounds on the brand new trains that will be coming to their area.

The brochures above are examples of the final products I have worked on with the communications team at Sydney Metro. I assisted in copywriting the work and my supervisor for the day read over the final product and was pleased with what I had put forward.
One of my Achievements that I am quite proud of is the Infographic shown above. I was able to work with a Professional Hygienist who is currently working with Sydney Metro in focusing on the health and safety of tunnelling in Australia. This Infographic is going to be used for toolbox talks being run by Sydney Metro NSW, as well as being used to educate the public and surrounding communities via their website and community newsletter.
