Vanessa was born in during a terrible storm, many years ago. The sky blackened with thunders roaring all around, and the women of the village prayed. Brujeria, they called her. A Â witch, a sorcerer. Her mother, however, was no a superstitious woman and instead of giving the newborn a holy name that would ensure her divinity, sanctity, and the blessing of her soul, she names her a plain name - Vanessa. As the girl grew, they all began to see that she wasnât like the others; her head always in the cloud, in the thin air, talking and giggling with things that were not there. For a while, everyone thought it was because there were no other children in the village, and the girl had to entertain herself, and the deemed it cute. But, when her mother remarried after her husbandâs death, and when little half-sister was provided to Vanessa, talking to thin air did not stop.
The names surrounded her all through the adulthood, and for a while it bothered her â never having anyone to truly confide in, to talk to, she began closing in on herself, and the more she did so, the more she talked to her invisible companions. In the end they just started calling her mad, even pitying her. That was, until her sister married and gave birth to the most precious thing in the world â her step-niece, and a baby she adored as if she were her own. Her sister allowed her to tend to the baby, hoping it would cure her sister and mend her sanity, and for a while it seemed to work. Vanessa no longer openly spoke to the spirits, no longer laughed and chatted with thin air â this time all her attention was to her baby niece, her Tessa.
But, life was a treacherous thing, and her sanity would not last for long. She felt the pull from her niece, a dangerous, tempting thing and it didnât take her long to realise. âShe is like you.â They whispered. âTake her with you. They will hurt her. Help her. Save her.â The voices spoke, but she did the one mistake she was bound to do â she ignored them. It was a moment of âinsanityâ a moment of fear for her niece, that she realised Teresa would be better off without her toxic presence. But, before she could leave, an incident happened - her nieceâs power began showing, and in order to protect her, she did one of the things ghosts spoke about.
She sacrificed herself. That day she covered her nieceâs tracks and made everyone believe that the thing that occurred was her doing â they banished her, threatening to burn her if she stayed any long, and Vanessa left, never looking back. For a while she felt like she was doing the right thing, but after a while she was no longer sure. After a while, she realised her full power, the ability to control those who were long dead and in the afterlife. She could make the spirits do her bidding, and then she forged a plan.
Finding Eden was easy. Making her niece follow was not as easy, but she knew Teresa would hear them, feel them, follow them. She kept her true identity hidden, going by an alias, her middle name, Circe, and sheâs waiting for the opportunity to reveal herself to her niece, even though they are in close proximity every day. She hesitates, knowing that Teresa might not  understand, or forgive her for leaving, but the ghosts whisper of dangerous, dreadful things and they are pushing her closer to her niece with every ticking minute.Â
Teresa Martinez: Vanessa has always been close to her niece, Teresa Martinez. She sensed there was a power, something dangerously similar to her own, inside her, just waiting to blossom. When it did, it wasnât what she had expected, but she was pleased by it, pleased to see that someone else shared, at least to an extent, the very gift she was bestowed upon. However, she couldnât tell Teresa what she was ( or, more accurately what they were ), as she had hoped that the little girl, her precious niece, would manage to keep it hidden. There was a large part of her that wanted to shield her from her fate, from the fate Vanessa knew she would suffer, as she suffered to â which is why she had left her, masking Teresaâs little mishap as she own, so that she could be shunned instead of the girl. She regrets that she left her behind, but she knows Teresa would find her, sooner rather than later, and this time sheâs taking the matters into her own hand, sending her little âadvocatesâ to whisper in Teresaâs ear while she sleeps â because her aunt was there, ready to help her, love her and care for her, as she should have all those years theyâve been apart.
