October 11th was a pretty exciting day for me as a vaper, an advocate, and as a Billings, Montana resident. The Right to Vape Tour was coming to my hometown! I have been pretty disappointed in advocacy since moving back home. It is basically non-existent in Billings, let alone, the entire state of Montana. This was a great opportunity to get residents, vapers and some of the leaders of advocacy together with locally owned small businesses and fight back.
Hosted at uBlaze on 24th Street, 3 pm kicked off with the #RTVTour bus pulling into the parking lot and being assigned a prime spot right along the street so lots of drivers going by could see the bright unmissable bus. I was actually surprised to see so many people show up to the event considering the lack of organization here in Billings. Managers from stores like Vapor Craziness and Old Skool Vape Society showed up and connected to share stories about vaping and advocacy.
I was delighted to finally meet Julie Woesnner, president of CASAA.org. I missed her in Milwaukee at the A Billion Lives North American Premiere unfortunately. We chit chatted for awhile and it was an honor to hear that a lot of the things I believe when it comes to advocacy being validated by someone as brilliant as Julie. We talked about shops pushing the boundaries when it comes the FDA regulations. Sadly we both agreed on the time frame we have as an industry before we start seeing shops succumb to the harsh and ridiculous FDA regulations.
October 11th also was another day in Vaping History. The Nicopure and Right to Be Smoke Free coalition had their oral arguments in front of a judge with the FDA lawsuit. Crazily enough this also gives me a serious reason to bitch. I was disappointed to hear that while the judge asking a lot of questions, she admonished the industry for vapers calling her and asking her not to ban vaping. Here begins my bitch fest.
This is a judge in a massive lawsuit against an organization of un-elected government officials that has an endless amount of financial backing, fighting to shut this entire industry down and you dumb twits are calling her and basically harassing her. Do you really think that hearing your stories is beneficial because it is not. She is hearing a legal case and really has no interest in our sad stories of quit smoking success. I know it sucks to say that, it really does but her interests don’t lie with whether or not we quit smoking with vapor products. Her interest right now needs to be focused on what the FDA is doing and whether or not it is legal and what the industry is doing to ensure that the FDA doesn’t need to overstep their boundaries. PLEASE DO NOT CALL EMAIL OR HARASS THE JUDGE HEARING THIS CASE. Please sit back and let the professionals handle this. This is not the place right NOW, for us small time advocates to step in an raise our voices. Focus raises your voices on your local and state reps.
Now back to the #RTVTour!
They are travelling around the country focusing on key cities in almost every state, you can follow their EVENTS HERE and find one that is closest to you. If you are near one, please attend. Bring your smoking friends, non smoking friends, contact your local and state reps and invite them along to listen to the great information provided by the American Vaping Society and CASSA as well as small business owners. Also follow the Right to Vape Tour on Twitter @SaveVape
One of the things that was talked about that I wish we had a little more time to focus on, was the lack of organization within the city of Billings. Vape shops here need to come together and work as one. Montana is a lucky state where the state itself does NOT recognize vapor products as a tobacco product and our fight here is minimal. But that won’t last forever.
