i ventured into the dark to search for a torch that would LIGHT THE PATH AHEAD.
CATCH ME DAD
lets him drop
why do we fall luke?
skywalker.
this has been what obi-wan had warned of him, of the temptations & lies he’d ultimately face at the hands of VADER & the empire. twisting perceptions and deceiving the light, forcing doubt into luke’s mind through his poisonous filtered words, and without obi-wan to guide him, to help him this time. vader is a fiend in black, a NIGHTMARE in ebony & a demon in his vision - - luke will AVENGE obi-wan, and he’ll avenge his aunt & uncle, leia’s parents, biggs and every damn planet the empire has DESTROYED. like a jedi, like his father before him.
the closer that vader comes, the further away does luke get, backing up with his glowing lightsaber VIBRANT at his defense and saviour. the CERTAINTY in which vader speaks those words, that luke WILL join him causes his skin to flush a deadly cold and ice like that of hoth to tip over his head, shaking back & forth to rid himself of it and the fiend getting inside his head ❛ — NEVER, i’ll never join you. ❜
exits lay all around but his leaden feet will not obey ( neither will his heart ) but his anger builds, a frightening LAVA burning his insides the more vader goads, the more he LIES. he searches his feelings & finds the pieces missing, open holes in his being where his parents were ripped out and the anger slips through the cracks, for vader was the one who created holes & tears in him and that can never be okay. a SNARL breaks the dam and his silence shatters with a roar so unlike himself, ❛ YOU KILLED HIM! ❜ before he LUNGES, lightsaber swinging in a wild arc to strike the sith lord’s side. he’ll not let him get away with such heinous crimes, he won’t let vader RIP HIM APART anymore.
what a fine wicked web the young jedi has found himself in, tangled in the threads of a dozen force-fed lies with no chance of surfacing. save one. if he could only see how the dark side of the force could open his eyes, pull away the heavy curtains of a poor, pathetic existence & welcome him into its steely grasp of pain & power. it is the sum of all parts that the sith traded his limbs for. nothing was more clear than the hate. never was such a strong word --- in a past life, he could remember so vehemently using it for anything & everything he was opposed to. ( he’d never be a slave again, he’d never betray his friends, he’d never fall, he’d never hurt her. ) in the end, he had done all of these terrible things & so much more. the darkness always consumes in the end.
skywalker’s refusal is nothing more than a stepping stone, nothing more than a child’s rebuttal against the inevitable. if his father’s blood runs in his veins, so does the unbearable temptation of the dark, the overwhelming ability to let it wash over him. all that was needed now was the tipping point. soon luke will have to make the very same choice that anakin did ---- to succumb or to resist.
the blurred flash of a saber swinging towards him put metal & muscle into action. it has truly been a long time since anyone’s fighting prowess could match vader’s & before obi-wan, it had been ages since his last duel. a small step to the right was all it took, his own blade crossing over to catch the blue one in a spray of colored light. ( certainly, it was a formidable weapon & one that came with bitter memories. was the jedi even aware of how many lives it had taken in its prime? ) then a twist of the wrist pushed the attack clashing back onto skywalker, at which point, the sith used the tip of his brilliant saber as an accusing finger aimed directly at the light-user’s face. he sees his face in the violent crimson light, features illuminating. he has the look of warmth & honeyed sweetness of his mother, alive in high cheeks & parted mouth fit for smiling. but his eyes reflect a chill, a deep-seeded void & there can be no doubt of where he had inherited such haunted eyes.
❛you killed him!❜ truth resonates in the claim, shaking the bionic madman to the core. in essence, vader had cut anakin skywalker into a hundred pieces & scattered him to the stars. what was left was a torn & half-devoured heart, buried in the shell of something once human. oh, to tell a child his dreams are real nightmares, to let one cold black truth eclipse warm & safe lies ... nothing is sacred.
❝no.❞ the tone of his voice as it passes over scarred vocal cords & through the filter of the breathing apparatus becomes lower, darker as he traps skywalker in his hidden gaze. & that heart which for years now had no function other than to beat begins aching, a pain in which he had not felt in so, so long. ❝no, luke. i am your father.❞
somehow when i was away, i hit a milestone. that’s amazing. i’m amazed. you’re all amazing. i feel like i should do something for it. i don’t know what though. any suggestions?
sigh.
So easily slain, Obi-Wan is not.
skywalker.
Secret? SECRET? His wild blue orbs sharpen, narrow at the masked evil before him with his eyebrows knitting together in CONFUSION. Vader speaks as though he KNOWS ALL OF HIM, every aspect of his life & every secret he’s ever kept, like he can see through him like a sheet of glass with minor scratches that blemish the surface. ( There will be more, there will be scars ). How can he know, how can he know Luke asks until he realises, his AGNORISIScomes in a flash of upset and his teeth grit, his eyes widen and Luke realises. Of course Vader knows, of course - - he did KILL HIS FATHER, after all.
❛ I’ll NEVER join you, ❜ These words he GROWLS out, but in a way that’s hushed & even despite the spike of emotion in his being, for he wants to block out the hate, the hurt, VADER. Yet, those words chip marks in his walls and they drop DRAMATICALLY in his moment of vulnerability, lightsaber reflecting the bright startled BLUE of his own eyes. Facing his father’s MURDERER on his own like this, Obi-Wan would have been ROLLING in the force to know he’d fallen so willingly into such a tight & obvious trap, ENSNARED in the Empire’s jaws and ready to be consumed by it’s resident nightmare. That farmboy naivety, that child-like take on decisions is still prominent inside him that Luke cannot decide as of yet what are JEDI CHOICES, and what are his OWN. Coming here, facing down Vader with little more than his trembling nerves & humming lightsaber, was his own choice completely.
His feet take cautionary steps back but his body falls out of its defensive crouch slightly, expression mixed with fear, with upset, and with CURIOUSITY towards Vader’s words. SOMEHOW, he has to know what this secret is, & he’ll find out either way, for all he wants to know is what TRULY HAPPENED to his father, but hearing it through the mottled breaths of Vader? It sends icy chills down his spine, repulsion through his stomach, but he wants to know. Obi-Wan truly would be cursing him, from beyond the force. ❛ I already know it, OBI-WAN told me what you did —— He told me everything. ❜
the boy denies him with a choice of words edged in finality. phrases such as these have ensured the deaths of many a brave & insolent soul, struck down mercilessly with a flick of his wrist. there can be no quarter for those unwilling to choose survival, there can be no life between refusal & the empire. in his mind, these are quite foolish words to speak in a situation like the boy has found himself in. without an ally, without a friend in sight, hardly out of arm’s reach of vader’s iron grasp. yet again --- this was not an unexpected reaction, he had long anticipated resistance. whether or not his patience would last was a different conundrum.
it would have perhaps been simple to force sense onto the young jedi, to beat him into submission. if he dares to stand so boldly against him, then it would have been his honor to watch him crumble at his feet. but he senses the doubt. he can see the waver in his true blue eyes, the way that he grips his lightsaber to ground himself, knuckles white against the hilt. the sith lord feels it as subtle as a ripple against a mill pond, but it is not the fear of the fight that steers luke away. it is the fear of the unknown. this is the tool that vader will use to shape him, this is the way he will ultimately conquer.
a movement of heavy boots brings him one step closer. ❝you will join me. once you know the truth ----❞ the tip of his searing blade hovers mere centimeters above the ground, humming at his side. he is only awaiting the precise time to strike, it’s only etiquette he should wait for the boy’s first move. ❝---- you will know when you are ready.❞
the truth was not a key to unlock freedom. instead it would be as shackles, chaining skywalker to a history he is ignorant of. it will not absolve vader, but commit him to a fault he’s dragged with him through a hundred star systems, back & forth across the galaxy. but to unravel the lies the jedi have woven? the thought alone brings him a sinister pleasure. he could have smiled at the idea of snatching the young man away from kenobi’s dead hands with the truth. yes --- he is a murderer. he’s slaughtered countless, without regret or remorse. but of the murder kenobi has set him a trial for, the one skywalker must play judge & juror ---- of this one, he is not guilty. ❝obi-wan has certainly trained you well. but he has also given you false hope, along with a string of lies.❞ if it were possible for him to laugh, this would have been the moment to do so. ❝---- search your feelings, young skywalker. you have always missed something in your life. i have the answer you seek. i know what truly happened to your father.❞
hey dad!! come play ball with me!!
❝of course i will —-❞ the comment is as agreeable as his hand is, gently ruffling his son’s mop of sun-kissed hair. in his other hand, he holds a ball, stitches deep in its air-filled leather. he tosses it merely a few inches into the air & catches it again quickly, testing its buoyancy. it was suitable for the game. a mildly challenging smirk graces his lips. ❝let’s see if you can keep up this time, hm?❞ the hoop which had laid so stationary at the boy’s feet rose up onto its edge with a beckoning of the force ( a fairly juvenile use of power, but anakin would move stars by hand to see happiness alight his child’s eyes ) & set to spinning as it rolled across the ground. the object was to see how many bounces could be achieved through the hoop before gravity inevitably ended its revolutions. it was a game he had played much as a child, one of the few he saw no harm in sharing with his son. much of luke’s childhood would be absolutely nothing like his own & he intended to keep that shadow of that far from ever touching luke’s bright, innocent face. he presses the ball into luke’s eager hands & gave his shoulder an encouraging squeeze, guiding him towards the goal. ❝—- go on. i’ll keep count for you.❞
within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame.
“You remember the dragon that you brought Vader forth from your heart to slay. You remember the cold venom in Vader’s blood. You remember the furnace of Vader’s fury, and the black hatred of seizing her throat to silence her lying mouth— And there is one blazing moment in which you finally understand that there was no dragon. That there was no Vader. That there was only you.
Only Anakin Skywalker. That it was all you”
just remember ; i wasn’t always like this. just remember ; my thoughts weren’t always to kill. just remember ; i was 「 human 」 before i was a monster.
apprentice.
he studies him with a pair of dark eyes, hidden behind his mask, though do not mistake his silence for hesitation. ❝ i am always ready. ❞ he’s been groomed for the dark, snoke did have a hand in that but surely anyone with eyes would see that it was his ties to darth vader—–alive or dead—–that kept him there.
a gentle nod is given in confirmation. masks haven’t bothered him in quite some time --- he’s become familiar with masks of varying degrees ( visible or otherwise ). whatever his grandson wore, there are no secrets that could be hidden. ❝the first order is a corrupt system, but it’s well-guarded.❞ he pauses, swallowing down his distaste for it. ❝--- in order to serve our cause, we must pretend to still serve theirs.❞
apprentice.
❝ i’m not having second thoughts. ❞ he responds quickly, not out of some ill attempt to cover up hesitation but more the desire to immediately halt his concerns. ❝ there is no one else i’d rather fight along side. ❞
he takes a moment before speaking again to weigh the answer, judging for himself as to the truth of it. thus far, he has been a worthy ally ---- the variable of blood did not morph the equation. ❝----- an opportunity to prove yourself is close. are you ready?❞
❝ don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts now. i assure you --- it will feel like freedom soon enough. ❞
you are the one in pieces. whatever you meant to love, in meaning to you changed yourself: you are not who you are (insp.)
