I totally understand being weighed down by societal expectations of performance and competency. But I don't care what they say: it ain't cool to be soft. I can't respect mediocrity. I tried out for football my freshman year and went to every practice in spite of being new to the sport, I didn't let the fact coach seldom put me in the game detour me from the goal which was to see it through till the end. I took the hazing and roasting till I earned the respect of my teammates and got good. When I took up boxing at 19 I had the same frame of mind. But I'll tell ya something about the latter...you know, the kids who never learned to lose also never learned to keep score and they're awful people as a result. There's something gross about them, they're aggressive and confrontational but also harmless. Those who've never been challenged cannot be held accountable and they also lack humility. I don't think you should let certain people stand near you.
