hi all,
thanks everyone for a productive semester, have a great break!
Hi all, think also of this week’s topic in the literal sense (reflection).
How might this be an interesting material or formal quality?
How does the mirrors impact the way we see the world/ourselves?
See also Edgerton’s The Mirror, the Window, and the Telescope and or Lucas Blalock’s Windows Mirrors Tabletops for different perspectives on the mirror in this context.
A reminder that your Final Assessment is due next week, so please finalise your projects for upload in Week 13

ASSESSMENT 2 DUE : PRESENTING IN CLASS
Just a reminder that we are presenting Assessment 2 in class.
Remember to post:
All process images from experiments (they can be rough) with captions
Your 700 word statement
Your final work (clearly labelled)
Remember this is a culmination of WEEKS of process and experimentation and make sure your final work is presented with intention and clarity.
See you in class!

Hi all, see Denis Beaubois ‘Currency’ for a classic example re: Value.
The documentation is particularly interesting also.
Also, a reminder that Assessment 2 is due next week, so be ready to speak as to your project and upload all your experimentation.
Final experiment;
Our world is made up of constant interactions with the human and non-human and while our human interactions might be the most memorable, most of the things we see, touch and interact with are non-human. We create the world we want to live in and so we mould what is around us to suit our needs. Humans although flesh and blood seem hard as stone when it comes to moulding and yet it’s stone and metal that we carve and shape. At home, I have a copper pot, I don’t use it for cooking, but it sits next to the hob and over time the side facing the heat has slightly changed colour. This gave me an idea for my poster. I started experimenting with metals, heating some copper over a Bunsen burner and electroplating copper onto a piece of stainless steel. Reflecting on the experiments I really liked the colour range and depth of the heat-treated copper and that such a fast and simple procedure could leave such permanent marks. For my final experiment. I took a large piece of copper sheet (slightly smaller than A2) and I started scrunching it like a piece of paper, I then heated the new form with a blowtorch and when I was happy with the breadth of colours, I left it be. I intended that to be my final work, but I noticed over the next couple of days that it was changing, the once smooth gradient of colours was becoming harsher with edges like veins running through it. It was ageing. Our inability to mould people makes us grasp onto what we can change, and that tends to be the non-human, and its only after we have left the irreversible marks that we are able to catch ourselves giving them human qualities in an attempt to connect and justify our actions. We make a point of making everything around us part of the human environment.
An excellent Assessment 1 Project.
Ongoing experimentation WITH MEATTT On the weekend I got to work with real meat on my scanner. These are just a couple of shots I took and have edited, I really like the way the photos came out even though it was hard to tell what you were going to get due to lack of control in seeing what is on the scanner. There is something about the plastic glad wrap that resonates with the materialistic world, and body modification. The human body being placed and packaged into a materialistic environment, raw meets plastic. I believe the work places both subjects the meat and a human in the same subcategory of raw meat, by stripping the identity of the body in the photos, reducing them to their natural form in the now modified environment.
Great experiments!!!

Thursday Class
Hi guys,
Unfortunately I can't make it to tomorrow's class, but Vicky will be taking over for me.
Vicky will be running about 5 mins late, but will be checking up on your progress.
Good luck for Assessment 3!
Hi all, Here is one of my fave shots from the lighting/DSLR exercise (courtesy @constancekikitis).
A good example of how macro lens can make something very banal quite interesting!
A reminder that Nikon DSLRs , Dedo lighting kits and lens are available at the Resource Centre and can be booked after a short, informal proficiency with Resource Centre Staff (1st Floor, F Block).
Props to legend Gateway tutor @makingstuffwithmell for the activity!
Psychedelic art experimentation
Worked with photoshop to produce psychedelic works, and attempted to make illusions.
Good Work in Progress!
A example of a really slick publication is The Gourmand.
Particularly seductive is the editorial photography style, well worth a look, especially if you’re interested in the crossovers between Art, Design and Food.
Mousse Magazine’s ‘Artist’s Words’ issue showcases some very effective use of text in creative ways, worth a look for creative typesetting.
