Finished Veil of Shadows and I have some very mixed feeling about the ending.
Spoilers!
It’s technically a happy ending but it’s the kind of a happy ending that I specifically dislike. The one where characters end up replaced by some kind of an AU versions of themselves. I especially dislike it when this situation messes with a ship – when in the end one person has all the memories and experience and the other one doesn’t. And they didn’t just lose the memories, no, they’re an entirely different version of themselves from another world/timeline. Like, the original character I spend the whole time cheering for is gone. It’s not them anymore. It’s their twin, a look-alike, that I don’t know anything about and have no attachment to.
And in VoS it happens x2. To both couples.
Wu Shi Guang is the only one who remembers everything. He acts like, despite all the timey wimey stuff, he did experience everything himself. Meanwhile Wu Wang Yan just had some vague dream and doesn’t even know why the bracelet has her hair in it.
And it’s even worse with Ji Ling and Lu Wu Yi. In the ‘original’ world/timeline, during their last ‘reunion’ in the Formless Moon Sect she doesn’t even know him. She doesn’t love him, doesn’t know that he loves her, didn’t go through life and death with him and for him. She’s not LWY I came to like, and not the LWY that JL loved either. Then, I guess, as the Star Stone said, they fall/get lost in another dimension or whatever and become completely different people altogether. They both have no memories of anything and aren’t even demons anymore. That’s not the characters I grew to love and not a ship that I shipped for 29 episodes, that’s two strangers.
I usually wouldn’t be so nitpicky about reincarnations, but it’s especially jarring in this drama. The drama that repeatedly iterated that you’re not your destiny and that it doesn’t matter how and why you were born/created. You are you based on your own choices and feelings and decisions and experiences in this lifetime. That’s literally what the first story (Xiao Wei’s) in the drama is about. That the reincarnation is no longer the ‘original’ person, even if they may share some similarities. So by the drama’s own logic the two people we see in the final scene are not Ji Ling and Lu Wu Yi. At least not the Ji Ling and Lu Wu Yi we spent watching the whole 29 episodes about.

I don’t mind me some toxic relationship, but damn, does VoS go heavy on Stockholm Syndrome
A completely innocent guy who only recently assumed the human form, who doesn’t really know anything about the world to/about a dude who’s been keeping him on a chain in an empty cave because he wanted to use him (and not in a sexy way):
Exhibit 1:
Exhibit 2:
"For me, this is already the best result."
I used to think I was the new moon, one of the moon phases. But in the end, I was never real. I'm nothing but a shameless thief.

Sometimes it just takes me out – how much fabric they’re dragging around
Like, look at the bed she’s lying on, then look at his cape. I bet you can make a whole new bedding set out of it
Or here. Look at them. How polite – sweeping the street after themselves
I get that this is some ~magical~ presence or whatever but you could probably dress a small village with this amount of fabric
VEIL OF SHADOWS 月鳞绮纪 (2026), Ep. 20
Does anyone else think that it was actually the evil butterfly bro that won the underwater duel? And is now just pretending to be Li Jie? And the reason he could pick up the sword is because the body is still technically Li Jie's? Or even because of the fact that they initially both ‘hatched’ from the same human guy, so they both had the ability?
I have the same problem with the VoS as I did with FoF. Both shows have this gang of main characters but I only care about some of them.
In FoF I loved Wen Xiao and Zhao Yuan Zhou. Zhuo Yi Chen was cute in the beginning but ended up very annoying. Pei Si Jing looked badass but I didn’t care about her and her brother at all. Bai Jiu and Ying Lei were fine as comedic reliefs but, again, I didn’t care about their stories. Li Lun – idk what to say, he was pretty unlikable from start to finish.
Now, the same thing is happening in VoS. I love Lu Wu Yi and Ji Ling and honestly would watch a whole show just about them. Wu Wang Yan was initially my favorite, but they’re handling her ‘world-weary immortal’ in a very cliché way and humanizing her in a way that is not doing it for me. Wu Shi Guang is just the type of character I don’t gravitate towards, this kinda clueless heroic himbo. So I’m just watching all his scenes on x1.5. And Li Jie is… why is he still even there? At least his evil twin was fun. Idk, Li Jie is just kinda this local gloomy jock who’s even more boring than Wu Shi Guang. All the good looks wasted. Oh, yes, and there’s also the ferret boy!
I really wish I could like (or at least be interested in) all the main characters in a GJM show. I bet it would make for a much more fun watch

You couldn't bear to see me hurt. Couldn't bear to see me scarred. Am I right?
