We're so proud of our international exchange students who served as panelists during a recent visit to James River High School in Chesterfield County. The students participated in a panel where they shared information about their home countries and what it is like to be an exchange student here in the U.S. The turn out was great; about 50 high school students enrolled in James River's Leadership and International Relations curriculum attended.

Streets with art!!

Walking in the streets of Richmond can be an excellent experience… I love when I see murals like this. I think they express the feelings and thoughts of people who make them.

This is one of my favorites!!

     My first day in Richmond, Virginia was the fallowing day of the biggest snowfall in five years. All the city was white, cold and beautiful.

     As a first impression of the city I had the gorgeous architecture and the coldest weather I have never been in before. But as days passed away, I realized that Richmond is much more than that.

     Friendly and smiling people, delicious food, many and different people to know, historical places to visit, different activities to have fun with on weekends, enormous and interesting museums to visit are just some things you can know here.

     On this blog I´m going to write about the places I visited during my stay in Richmond and I´ll give you some advices about your trip if you are planing to stay some days in this wonderful city.

When I finally arrived from this long long trip that I made from Guadalajara to RVA (Tijuana, los angeles, charlotte in between) I had many questions about one important issue: where to find Mexican food, and better yet, where to find Mexican ingredients to prepare my own mexican meals. I thought it was an impossible thing, surprisingly it last for just one day. Next day on Krogers I found that they sell some of Mexican useful ingredients like coriander, Serrano and jalapeno chilies, avocado and some of Mexican canned food such as conserved chilies, salsas (hot sauces) even Mexican chocolate like my own personal favorite “chocolate abuelita”. But for example I couldn’t find decent tortillas or some other dry chilies to prepare more elaborated dishes, like “guajillo” or “chipotle”, nor other fresh vegetables as “chayotes” or “calabacitas” a kind of zucchini that is very used on Mexican traditional food. On my personal quest to have Mexican decent food (not the awful burritos from McDonalds or from CHIPOTLE restaurant) I went to lalo’s cocina to see if there maybe it could happened. Lalo is the owner and he is a nice guy, he is been here for more tha 20 years, but he doesn’t cook any more, and when I saw the oriental cookers on his kitchen I was not so sure about the authenticity of the Mexican flavor that he offers. But in a way he saved my life, he told me about El Rey Latino Market on 6006 W Broad St. a few miles from his restaurant. I went to the library to get a bicycle borrowed from VCU and I start pedaling to my new destiny, it took me like 30 minutes to went there. I found the most specialized spices and ingredients, not only from mexico, but also from many countries in latin America. And they also have a restaurant wher to eat nice and well done latino dishes… and at last, a very nice and decent tortillas (not fresh and hot, but really delicious). And I had my first kind of Mexican real dish that night.

I just found this place to smoke hookah. It’s name is Argeleny and it is a nice place because is not that expensive, the service is very good and they play good music.

It’s not that far from West Grace street, the place I live, so I can go walking without a problem.

This place has different hookah flavors :) some of them I didn’t know them, but now I just love them.

I like to go with my friends on weekends, some times before going to a night club, and we enjoy being there because we play the music we like, we can have a good talk in there, also we just relax in the comfortable couches.

The hookah stuff is very nice because they are not made of plastic or common material, some of them have very good designes at the bottles and some soft material made of I don’t know what that  makes it look very fancy.

In Guadalajara, the city where I come from, we have a couple of places where you can smoke hookah but they are very expensive and they also don’t have that strong flavor that these ones have.

Richmond a city with amazing people, have one of the best universities of the USA

One of my favorite discoveries so far in Richmond, is definitely the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. I just loved the gift shop and all the cool souvenirs you can find in there .

I you’re planning to travel to Richmond, VA, you HAVE to visit this place! Whether if you’re a Poe’s fan or not, I can assure you that the visit will worth your time.

You can easily found the museum in the 1914 E Main St. in Richmond’s downtown.

If you want to add a plus, try to visit the museum in winter, snow gives a great atmosphere to the place.
