A.J. Buckley interviews director Phil Sgricca, discussing Supernatural, The Boys, Vought Rising, and Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy.
The VR trailer
This is all speculation on my part, but I'm really excited about the VR trailer, so I wanted to go on about it!
Perhaps the mystery centers around the black soldier who was part of the early experiments by Vought and likely died. Civilians (with Kiki Layne's character related in some way to the soldier) investigate his mysterious death and start to uncover the shadowy Vought enterprise. So there may be a cohort of civilians plus a police detective or intelligence-connected operative comprising a group mirroring the "boys" side of The Boys.
There is the Vought company, just establishing but masterminded by Frederick and Clara with ties to the US government. According to TB lore, Frederick came to the US via Operation Paperclip, and Clara was the first successful V1 supe. In the trailer, she might be recruiting people with celebrity potential to turn into a supe team to be the public face of Vought. She seems to appear as Liberty when Soldier Boy is debuted.
There's the first supe team: Bombsight, Private Angel, Torpedo. With the addition of Soldier Boy and Liberty. They all seem to have gotten the original V1. Thomas Godolkin seems to have gotten a variant of V1 that was highly unstable. After that, the less powerful but more stable Compound V replaced V1. Then come next gen supes, like Golden Geisha.
So the structure of the show feels similar to The Boys, which makes sense for a spin-off. But I love the different look and feel of the trailer, especially period styling, production design and interesting camera shots that they've showcased. I'm sure the music choices will be interesting, too.
Pure speculation, but I wonder if the beginning of the show will have Stormfront or Stan Edgar appearing in front of Soldier Boy's cryo chamber, and have that prompt the flashback to the beginning of the story. That way they can, if they want to, weave in contemporary "sequel" scenes as well. Switching back and forth can be tricky if that involves SB, because of Jensen's beard, so I don't expect a lot of sequel stuff featuring him, but Stormfront can get away with it since she's probably still recovering from Ryan's attack and covered in prosthetics.
I wish we didn't have to wait till 2027 to see it!
