the stranger things finale was bad. not because of byler though. because of everything else. my name is vee and i have a degree in media studies and anthropology. basically, i spent four years of college studying media, how it affects our culture, how we consume media and what makes a piece of media good or not.
and the stranger things finale was bad. here's why.
-building up to a big battle and then it being over in less than ten minutes is bad pacing
-killing your heroine is almost never a good movie. there are times where it CAN work but it has to be done in a very specific way. eleven's death was not done in a good way. and frankly i don't know anyone who enjoys a fake out 'they may or may not be dead' trope.
-making hopper lose his daughter twice is next level fucked up. no one liked it on the walking dead that they kept killing carol's kids, why would you think this is a good idea?
-in regards to eleven, for a show that had such good found family tropes in the first few season to have the girl who grew up isolated in a lab willingly choose to leave behind her friends and family is terrible messaging
-mike was in no way the only one who ever really knew el. that undercuts so many of her relationships with the other characters. especially hopper, will and max.
-sometimes it's okay to leave questions open to interpretation. what's not okay is to abandon story lines with no real conclusions.
-i am a byler truther but i never expected the duffer bros to make them cannon. for some abysmal reason i did expect the conclusion of will and mike to be less cringey.
-i don't think will NEEDED to end up with anyone especially mike (because while i am a byler truth will, honey, you can do so much better) however frankly i think both will's coming out and will having powers took way too long. i assumed will would have powers back in season 2. they waited until the last season to do anything concrete with it and it's clearly left a sour taste in people's mouth.
-the writing was just bad. clunky dialogue, plots of convenience, letting things go unsaid or unacknowledged (where is max's mom, how did none of this make national news, the government really just let everyone go ???? )
BUT BUT BUT i will say there are a few things i did enjoy
-nancy not ending up with either jonathan or steve (and showing up with that gay ass haircut)
-dustin keeping eddie's memories alive (though an explanation of why people no long think the hellfire club is demonic would have been nice)
-the actual end with a new generation of kids playing dnd was a fun touch
-steve didn't die so that's nice
