I'm going to start this post by acknowledging that many of you out there in the country do not have access to the dozens upon dozens of types and brands of non dairy milks available to some of us. I am super fortunate to live in an area where I can get pretty much any type of non dairy milk I desire. Some of them are downright expensive, and I wouldn't buy them anyway, but I have access to a plethora of different treats, including my most recent discovery, Quinoa/Oat Milk. So for those of you who are choosing compassion over cruelty, and opting out of dairy products, hooray for you! The bovines of the world thank you. The environment thanks you. And your health thanks you. If the only brand of non dairy milk you have access to is SILK, then, carry on.
This post is for those of you who choose to buy SILK over the many other brands, within the same price range, as SILK. This post is for you folks out there who like to shop at Whole Foods, and STILL buy SILK.
Most of you know by now that SILK is owned by White Wave, which is owned by Dean Foods, the largest dairy company in the country. What you may not (or may) realize is that by buying SILK, you are putting your vegan dollars into the pockets of a GIGANTIC DAIRY CORPORATION.
I shudder even thinking about this!
This video was taken a few years ago at a Land O Lakes facility, also owned by White Wave. When you buy SILK, your money is going to the same people who do this to these beautiful Mothers.
I would encourage you to seek out where your food comes from, even if you are already vegan. We as consumers make choices each and every time we spend our cash to buy anything. While I am all for more vegan options in the main stream, I don't believe giving your money to a giant dairy conglomerate is the answer. Now, if they want to turn into a dairy-free soy dairy, then we'll talk.
Live with the least harm. Be compassionate. Love Bovines.
PS - If you can't stand to watch the video, you should not be purchasing Dairy or SILK products. The discomfort watching this causes you doesn't even compare to what those mothers go through.
