just discovered the GAYEST taylor swift lyric ever and i’m losing it
ok so i’m spiraling over lyrics from Taylor’s new album Life of a Showgirl DELUXE Life Is A Song Acoustic Version — specifically the song "Ruin the Friendship" My Advice Version — and it is SO MUCH gayer than I was expecting 😭
like, i went along in thinking it might be about blake lively or even her male friend like everyone else was taking about (who passed away years ago and Taylor gave a speech about him when she was really young like 19 or 20), but THIS? oh this is different.
at 1:15 in the song, she sings:
“wilted corsages dangle from OUR wrists over his shoulder I catch a glimpse and see you're looking at me”
LIKE. HELLO??? wilted corsages “Our wrists” = both Taylor and the person she’s singing about are wearing them = they’re both girls and the girl is looking at HER, not the boy she’s dancing with. she's literally catching her staring over his shoulder
this isn’t about a boy. this is about a girl. and the “friendship” she’s ruining? it’s with her.
and then tying it to real life during the Eras Tour (when this whole album was written), someone Taylor went to high school with passed away. Abigail (yes, that Abigail) posted about her.
And these all tie in to the timings and Taylor’s life there’s even pictures of Taylor at her Memorial with Abigail and their other school friends that Abigail posted on Instagram.
anyway. it’s even more heartbreaking the second time you listen.
TLOAS intentionally evokes the works of other artists. CANCELLED! has a similar melody to Yellow Flicker Beat by LORDE
The difference is important tho, as YFB has an inverse meaning to CANCELLED! the first being about defeating those in power who have wronged you and the second being about abusing your power to protect the wrongdoers of society (but on a deeper level, if you view the songs as sisters, safeguarding ostracised folk from the public)
the hunger games has been referenced this album quite a bit. Susanne Collins based her novels off of the USA’s manipulation of public opinion through Hollywood. Celebrity life distracted from their international crimes and the tactic harked back to an old method from Ancient Rome.
Panem et circenses. Bread and circuses.
Spectacle keeps the public in line.
The biggest form of spectacle in Ancient Rome was the gladiator pits. They sponsored them, advertised them, encouraged them as a collective form of entertainment. And the Caesar of the time held the great responsibility of determining which victor lived or died.
Except that he didn’t. Because the crowd was king. If the Caesar made a choice the crowd disagreed with, their own approval rating would plummet.
This is the great point i think Taylor is making with this album - that celebrities live and die by likeability. Not really anything else. We tell ourselves it’s other things - politics, gender, race, but no. Those definitely factor in, but ultimately it’s all entertainment. The most likeable ones succeed and thrive irrespective of their own goodness or deserving.
I mean, all it took was one subpar album and people have already insisted she’s NEVER had talent.
But it’s also more than that. Celebrities are the tools by which empires mask their horrors. Do you really believe they have freedom? Power? The industry consumes and cannibalises each and all that would push against the goals of the US.
Taylor is absolutely a threat to government, and they know that. She *is* being strategic rn.
Green and orange. Fire and spring. Peeta and Katniss.
Katniss the archer, the mockingbird, the fire.
Peeta the baker, the dandelion, the hope.
Showgirls are the circus dwellers, Taylor is on a tightrope. She isn’t doing a “let them eat cake” move, she’s trying to navigate a fascist uprising while protecting the family - the lgbt community, women, poc, the good Americans.
Do I know how she’s doing that? Not at all. But the curtain hasn’t fallen yet!

The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.
And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is out now.
