Wicca. It seems everyone knows the basics, but do you know about all the different types of rituals that a life lived Wiccan would entail? This list is brief in detail, but explains some of the various rites a Wiccan will go through from Birth to Death.
A Wiccan baptism, more or less;
a ritual performed on infants and pre-pubescent children, bringing them under the protection of the God & Goddess.
Can also be a time the child is given his/her first Magical name.
Child also receives Godparents at this time
Acknowledgement of a certain age/phase in a young person’s life
Rituals can be performed to commemorate entering puberty, reaching adulthood, completing goals, etc.
Often the child is given their first working tools at various stages of development.
If appropriate, child is allowed to choose their own magical name
A ritual to mark the dedication of a new Wiccan to the Coven; or the transition to higher level of knowledge for established Wiccans
Can be done solitary, or within a coven. (depending on branch of Wicca, not all branches accept or allow self initiation or self dedication)
This is the most controversial of rituals besides The Great Rite. There is great debate between Traditional Wiccans and Solitary Wiccans regarding whether dedication and initiation are valid/allowed.
A set of 8 Annually repeating rituals that follow the path of the Sun and the God and Goddess throughout the calendar year.
Divided into 4 High holy days and 4 lower holy days
Celebrated by a number of various Pagan faiths
A set of Moon rituals that repeat monthly on a roughly 28 day cycle
Rituals are often very feminine focused due to their similarity with the cycle of menstruation (but they do not have to be so one sided.)
Depending on the Coven or Tradition, these may be the only times a Coven works together during a month period of time besides a Sabbat.
A trial marriage ceremony-can be public or private
Literally the binding of hands, resembling the binding of body and soul.
Traditionally done for A year and one day. After this time the couple/family can choose to marry for life, or end the relationship.
Handfastings can be performed at the end of each year and a day until the couple/family is decided on if they want to bond for life.
In more modern days it is a legal wedding ceremony binding the couple or family for life.
A lesser known ritual-Usually a private ceremony
Sort of a Wiccan Divorce ceremony
Formal separation of a couple that has previously been handfasted
Allows the couple to part as friends on equal footing.
A sacred union; sexual in nature.
Performed within a circle, where one person takes the God into his/her body (aspects), and the other person takes the Goddess into her/his body (aspects).
Typically only performed by committed couples within a Traditional Coven setting. (NOTE: If you are visiting a coven, or haven’t officially joined that coven, and someone solicits you to perform this ritual with them, RUN)
Can be done with same-sex as well as opposite-sex couples.
A ritual to mark a female witch’s change from Mother to Crone.
Marks the individual as an Elder in the community. They take on a role of teacher and adviser rather than figurehead.
The Crone takes this opportunity to step back from leadership and allows someone else to take over leadership of a coven if in one.
Typically occurs with women over age 60
A ritual to mark a Male Witch’s change from Father to Sage
Marks the individual as an Elder in the community. They take on a role of teacher and adviser rather than figurehead.
The Sage takes this opportunity to step back from leadership and allows someone else to take over leadership of a coven if in one.
Typically occurs with men over age 60
A ritual to mark the passing of a witch.
Done after a funeral to help aid the spirit of the witch to Summerland
Can also be done as last rites for a dying individual.
There are various other rituals of course, but they will vary coven to coven and witch to witch. Some will not be practiced at all. I hope this list is informative and feel free to add on to it, or send me an ask!
