Calling all Doulas, Midwives, Nurses, Healthcare Workers:

My mother and father were both born at home in modest, rural communities. (Wadmalaw Island, SC & Havelock, NC) They were both delivered by Black midwives because they were denied "conventional" healthcare during apartheid here in the South. Black folks have had to create entire systems within their communities in order to survive let alone LIVE and THRIVE. If you are feeling hopeless regarding these cruel & regressive laws being passed that restrict a person's access to reproductive healthcare, please remember this woman's work and her name: Maude Callen

Maude created an entire healthcare system with a solid nursing education, a lantern and love for her people. She was not just a midwife or a nurse, she was a doctor to many! It's reported that she delivered anywhere from 600 to 800 babies. She set broken limbs. Administered vaccines. All because Black folk and poor people were denied their humanity and bodily autonomy.

So, I'm challenging all doulas, midwives, nurses, CNAs...to band together in the spirit of Maude Callen and start your collectives. Start your own healthcare systems! Leverage your resources, education and access and follow in the footsteps of women like Maude and the woman who delivered my mom, Edna Pritchard. BUT...keep fighting!
