Shiva as Tripurantaka, Destroyer of the Three Demons, bronze, 8th century, Pallava, Sarabhai Foundation, Ahmedabad. . . . "Despite the suggestion of warrior-like weaponry held in the hands, there is no trace of distortion in the form, not a hint of agitation. What the sculptor seems to have picked up is the moment of utter calm after an upheaval. The Lord has already subdued and destroyed; he seems to say the three demons, masters of the cities respectively of iron, silver and gold, do no longer exist. Now a gentle smile hovers around Tripurantaka's lips, holding the promise of anugraha and release. The breath that one senses in the form is palpable, but there is no suggestion of it being consciously held or controlled; it seems simply to inform the entire figure, holding it together, imparting to it great warmth."
