Though Noble and Naomi laid the foundation for the base aesthetic, Dan’s Rider form is heavily influenced by his subconscious idolisation of Johnny. In his youth, particularly his adolescence, Dan, oblivious to their connection, began putting together a bike of his own, lacking the skills and confidence to so much as ride it, yet boasted to all who’d listen that, some day, he’d be as cool, as badass, as Johnny Blaze.

Sure enough, on activating his fragment of the Medallion, Dan’s Rider became an exaggerated extension of his childhood idol. Clad in leather and barbed wire chains, he gained an innate sense of not just how to ride his now-demonic bike, but perform Blaze-like stunts upon it, as well as a confidence that allowed him to better bond with his other.

Now that he’s older, he wouldn’t be caught dead admitting to this, insisting it all comes from Naomi’s influence, but, despite the hardships he’s endured over the years as the Rider, he won’t deny that there are most definitely times where he gets by through channelling Blaze’s confidence and showmanship.

A prolonged silence falls upon the two, Dan’s gaze making every effort to avoid Johnny’s. Seldom does he find himself lost for words, particularly with the other, yet there’s something so painfully tragic about that confession, how convinced of it all he sounds, that Dan can’t help but find himself stripped of his usual repartee.

Normally, he’d chastise him in a way only snarky little brothers can get away with, cos runnin’ away’s the one thing you’re actually good at?, but there’s a time and a place for banter, he surmises, and this sure as hell ain’t one of them.

It does, however, bring him back to thoughts he hasn’t dwelled upon since finding the truth behind their relationship, that, by all counts, Johnny should’ve been the one to receive Noble. Maybe, in another life, he could’ve spared him so much loss and pain if he’d been the one bonded to Zarathos. Maybe, with a more agreeable spirit, he wouldn’t be such a tragically brooding mess. Maybe he’s the source of all Johnny’s problems, and undeserving of his trust…

No. No, he won’t allow himself to go back there, to a time where he viewed the Rider as a burden, wallowed in self-pity. It may not be ideal, but they have to play the cards they’ve been dealt, for better or worse. And, if that means having to deal with Johnny’s angst with as much patience and empathy as others afforded him? Then, so be it.

“ Anyone, or yourself? ” He surprised himself with the amount of confidence with which he responded, but he’d be lying if he said he felt confident. He knew all too well where Johnny was coming from, albeit through differing circumstances, so it helped to have some degree of experience in his corner. “ The lives we lead, Johnny…We ain’t like other people. But, that doesn’t mean we gotta shut ourselves off, either, ’specially when we’re hurting. ”
