Here is an art post of a #wip, since I haven’t posted anything art-related in a bit. It’s a life-sized self portrait. The truth is.. life is a bit distracting at the moment. I’m in the process of applying to a bunch of grad programs, which takes a fair amount of time and organization. Art is frequently used as a medium for both self-expression and self-reflection. Love & Loss is a quaint exhibition on display until December 13, 2015 that showcases different artistic responses to the recent death of a loved one. Upstairs in the West Bedroom Gallery of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art are two paintings, three prints, and a five-piece ceramic sculpture that transform grief into figures of great emotion and striking beauty. In the middle of the room is a black bench with two black notebooks tucked into the side pocket. Inside are notes written by spectators on what they feel love and loss truly means. After observing the handwriting and signatures in these little black books, it was apparent the audience ranged from senior citizens to elementary school students. Although simple, the phrases written were profound: "Love is being able to hold Mommy every night and loss is going to bed and having to hold a stuffed animal instead" - Emily, 7.

One piece that particularly stands out is a 74 ¼ x 78 ¼ inch oil painting titled “The Black Man Always Hides His Left Hand” by Arnaldo Roche (1993). According to art historian Robert Hobbs, the artist’s older brother, Felix, shot their sister Nancy while Arnaldo watched with his fourteen year old eyes. The head of the figure in the painting is modeled after the artist while the shape and contortions of the body and limbs are representations of the brother’s mental state. The figure’s arms are raised above his head, the left hand missing and the right hand grasping the handle of a knife. Within this man’s torso is a nest-like shape with the left hand placed upright inside. It seems as though the hidden left hand referenced in the painting’s title is purposely tucked away into the figure’s personal void. Entering the West Bedroom Gallery, an on-looker is immediately struck by the large size and intense subject of this contemporary painting, but it is the intricate detailing that keeps their attention captured.
