Montparnasse snapped his head up, āNo, no. Of course not,ā he clicked his tongue looking everywhere but at Sous his hand coming up to scratch the back of his neck nervously. Truth was this was day three without any sleep, but he couldnāt let the other man know that.

Montparnasse was slowly making his way through his soup. Really trying to take his time to enjoy it. He had a habit of eating too fast and wanted to fight against it . āI wish Brujon had left already. He makes me uncomfortable,ā he sighed softly. āBut yeah I think the general consensus is Iām a cat. Gueulemer is a dog though letās be real.ā
āWe can both agree on that one. Part of me wishes we could just kick him out but if thereās hard feelings he could just take that to someone else who could really fuck us over.ā He sighed, looking much more content than he had in months. As dramatic as the last couple of days had been and as much as he worried about how deep Sabine had hurt Montparnasse, there was enough weight taken off his shoulders by the revelations that, now that the initial fear had passed, some of the near-permanent tension permeating him ticked a notch lower.Ā āI can see that, but I want to hear your reasoning behind it.ā
āYeah, thatās what worries me too. He knows so much. Putting up with him is so hard,ā Montparnasse rolled his eyes and shook his head. He gave a nod and finished off his soup, āOkay, okay. Claquesous nodded thoughtfully, taking Montparnasseās bowl and his own over to the kitchen while he listened. āYeah, definitely a weird dog.ā As he washed their dishes and set them to dry, he tried to think of who else was what, but he was struggling with it. In that way he did not feel he was quite as creative as the younger man. He turned partially toward him while he set on the kettle for his traditional evening cup, enough water added for both of them just in case. While doing so he asked, āWhat would Babet be, then?ā
āHmmm, Babet is a bear, heās super protective, will fuck your shit up and also needs to hibernate at certain points because he goes until heās too tired,ā Montparnasse explained after a moment of thinking, āOverall he doesnāt attack unless provoked, or if itās hunting for survival so yeah Babet is a bear,ā he gave a nod before dissolving into a yawn and stretching again. He didnāt want to go to sleep not yet, āWhat kind of tea are we having?ā
Another nod. āAnd you donāt want to bother him when heās tired or youāre liable to lose a hand.ā A small, soft smile tugged at his mouth as he point at Montparnasse. āAnd heāll do anything for his cub, who heās also more like a harmless teddy bear for than a real bear.ā An odd ache in his chest told him it was time to leave the subject be. Tea was an easy switch. āI was figuring something like passionflower, chamomile, or peppermint.ā
Montparnasse giggled and gave a nod of agreement. āI know that first hand,ā he shook his head, āYeah, he has a soft spot for me. If anyone messes with me heās back to a real bear in an instant which is great to keep Thenardier and Brujon at bay,ā he wandered into the kitchen and leaned against the counter, if he was standing he had a better chance of staying conscious. āPeppermint would be really nice after the soup we just had. At least for me,ā he smiled softly. āYou sound like youāre leaning towards passionflower yourself though.ā
Claquesous turned to fetch them both mugs, not even having to look to know his from the other he snagged. He glanced quizzically at Montparnasse. āI donāt know what youāre on about.ā Only the tin for mint was pulled from the cupboard. It really seemed an odd suggestion that he could tell hinted at something, but what he meant eluded him. The water reached boiling and he poured it over tea bags in each mug, passing one to the younger man.
Montparnasse wrapped his hands around the mug letting the warmth fill him, a content hum emanating from him, āI didnāt mean anything by it. I just thought from the order you listed them in it sounded like you might want to change things up tonight,ā he smiled. He hoped someday Claquesous would figure out his feelings towards Babet. That would make his whole damn year if those two would finally just get together.
"Maybe another time," he answered. He supposed that perhaps he was just being paranoid in assuming Montparnasse was leaving metaphorical breadcrumbs to something else and that he was failing to connect the dots. Perhaps there were no dots and he was looking for them on a blank canvas. There was definitely something, he just could not tease out the scent to follow.
If his feelings for Babet had been rooted purely in lust he could have recognized his feelings. Had recognized them at one point, years ago, and let them pass without ever acting on them. The loneliness that lingered afterward he never connected back to those initial emotions. The same went for the more companionable than awkward silences when they were together--that, if anything, he attributed to just having worked together for so long. The subtle ache at his absence he ignored almost subconsciously. In his mind, it was done and over with, the feelings he knew had passed.

And Brujon doesnāt deserve cuddles, especially not from someone as sweet as you. Heās got a lot of shit to unlearn first.ā
